Do I have time to wait before a atpical ductal Hyperplasia excision?
I was told yesterday I have Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia. I want to make an informed decision on which route to go. Can I put an excision off for a couple of months.

I also have ADH and am wondering the same thing. I have a consult set up w a breast surgeon this week. As I keep doing research it seems that others get second opinions. I'm so lost in this process b/c the doctors just making everything sound like routine testing, which is why I decided to join this group. Would love for someone with more knowledge to chime in!
Yes same way I feel.
Im sure I'll have the excision, but I want to do my reserch.
Im on another blog as well. I'll post when I get more information.
My initial biopsy came back as ADH. I had my Lumpectomy 3 months later and I was diagnosed with grade 2, extensive DCIS and ALSO a very rare invasive, Metaplastic Carcinoma.
I asked my Oncologist if he thought the ADH could have progressed that soon in that 3 month timeframe and he said he believes it did.
Not sure if that helps decide anything but thought I would share my experience.
In that time-frame where you getting second opinions? Curious at what point you seek out another opinion. Do you weight until after the lumpectomy?
@chitown
I did not get a second opinion. I waited until I had my surgery consult to decide what I was going to do. I felt confident after that appointment that I should have the Lumpectomy but my “mass” was the size of a walnut and I could feel and see it, so I knew it needed to be removed. And then when it came back with 2 types of cancer, I was really glad I did.
Thanks! Super helpful. I have my consult tomorrow at northwestern. Did you go to mayo?
I have had 4 surgeries for ADH, ranging 4-8 years apart. All were initially seen on mammo and/or MRI w/contrast. No lesions were ever palpable. I had either a stereotactic or MRI -guided biopsy, depending on which scan first identified the concern. I underwent lumpectomy for ALL of them because that surgery is the Gold Standard treatment for ADH. There are several reasons for proceeding with surgery, including as high as 5%-30% incidence of upstaging from ADH to cancer when surrounding tissue is reviewed by pathology. An initial biopsy, even with 6 core samples, doesn’t 100% rule out presence of malignancy nearby. I am blessed with a general surgeon who specializes in diseases of the breast. His lack of hesitation has kept me cancer free by not leaving pre-cancerous cells to transmute. Wishing you all the best with your decision.
Thank you were very helpful. Question- I have a detectable mass of less than a centameter.
I want to get this done with a specialist in Arizona. Although Im unable to travel for three or four months. Did you wait any length of time before your excision.
@chitown
Good luck!
I did not go to Mayo but they consulted to help diagnose my rare cancer.
@1buffster1 waiting 3 to 4 months is a long time to wait. What is your local doctor advising? Sometime, size isn’t the issue, it is cancer Can you do a telehealth consult with the specialist in Arizona? That specialist may recommend you to a local breast surgeon. Blessings to you. These are hard decisions.
