What is desired level of Vitamin D for those with osteoporosis?
I'm trying to find out what the desired blood levels of Vitamin D should be if you have osteoporosis, My levels have always been on the low side of the range 30-100. Six months ago it was 27.8 so my Dr increased my Vitamin D supplement to 3,000 IU/day. Now my levels are 40.9. I read they should be above 50. Can anyone provide more information?

On Tymlos I did 3,000 units/day because I read that Tymlos "eats" D3. My level was 52 before starting Tymlos at a dose of 2,000 units/day and stayed stable in the low 50's throughout treatment. Now I am back down to 2000.
I take 5000 IUs a day and my D3 level is 51.
nmol/L would be a higher number than ng/ml to convert multiply ng/ml by 2.5
The endocrinologist I consult with likes 40 to 70 ng/ml.
So 100 to 175 nmol/L
@ripley
The Vitamin D Counsel (who knew?) standards:
Deficient: 0-40 ng/ml (0-100 nmol/l)
Sufficient: 40-80 ng/ml (100-200 nmol/l)
High Normal: 80-100 ng/ml (200-250 nmol/l)
Undesirable: > 100 ng/ml (> 250 nmol/l)
Get the blood test and compare to the normal range for calcium. Look it up in Google too.
bobweller, medical practitioners like to see a higher level of D with osteoporosis and cancer. https://neurosciencenews.com/vitamin-d-microbiome-cancer-25990/
Some osteoporosis medications employ D so effectively that they lower serum levels notably Tymlos and Forteo.
I think it depends on the results of blood test. Even tho I was getting 2000/day, my test came back too low so I was upped to 5,000/day. Doc also suggested changing to a liquid vitamin D b/c I was on the low end of acceptable D amounts.
@ripley, Are you asking how much Vitamin D a person should take per day or what the actual recommended levels of vitamin D would be on a blood test? Or both? Thanks.
I know the normal range for Vit D is 30-100, but I'd like to know what number within that range is best for those with osteoporosis.
From the research I have done, the optimum 25(OH) vitamin D level for osteoporosis is 30-50ng/mL (75-125nmol/L). You want to adjust your vitamin D3 intake to get into that range which is typically around 1000 to 2000 IU/day.
