First abnormal Pap smear LSIL / no HPV testing
Hi all! Coming here for comfort, but also real talk as needed. I'm 28 and have been receiving regular paps since I was 21, but I've never been tested for HPV (however I received the Gardasil shot series when I was younger). They have always come back normal until this time. I was in a relationship with the same person for 5 years until last year, and I have been seeing/sleeping with my new partner for about 6 months.
I've never received an abnormal pap before, until I went for my annual OBGYN visit two weeks ago. My results were posted to MyChart yesterday and were significant for LOW GRADE SQUAMOUS INTRAEPITHELIAL LESION (LSIL). My provider still has not viewed my results so I haven't heard from them yet, but I took to good ol' Google and now I'm freaking out. I'm seeing that most LSIL are due to HPV, but I've never been tested - I kind of want to assume that it's just because my new boyfriend passed it along to me, but I'm hesitant to believe my delusions since I did get the Gardasil shots (however not sure about their effectiveness).
Last year, my pap came back normal (no lesions, anyway) but showed signs of BV and I was put on antibiotics for a week and have not had any symptoms since. This year it's showing LSIL. I am completely healthy otherwise, and my OBGYN had no concerns from my exam, even saying "See you next year" on my way out. Does anyone have experience and/or advice with this? I also have *awful* health insurance so nervous about the cost of any potential follow up testing, as well.
Any experiences, advice, real talk, etc. that you all have to offer would be greatly appreciated as I want to hear from my doctor, as I'm now halfway convinced I have cervical cancer. Thanks everyone!!

I understand you being concerned. I wish I knew more about it, but I’m afraid I don’t. Hopefully, you’ll get word from your doctor soon. Sending well wishes your way!
Hope you can talk to your dr asap before your mind runs away with you and all this fear. We tend to do that. Thanks to google. I’m not sure what lsil is. Only thing I can say by experience is I had a normal pap all my life until 5 yrs ago when it came back hpv positive at age 52. Then since then paps are normal again. Dr said its usually dormant in most and can just show up. I’m sure you will be fine. You are healthy and took precautions with gardasil. Just talk to your dr and clear your mind. Lets us know what your dr says
Wishing you the best. My mom took DES so I have had biopsies for dysplasia on my cervix as a teeneager so this has long been an area of concern for me. I've had tests come back positive for HPV and then negative for HPV, and follow ups have amounted to nothing. My bet is that you are fine, but stop googling and follow up with your doctor so you can breathe. Fingers crossed for you.
I did the further testing, biopsy and colonoscope and it showed VAIN1. Said it can go away or can advance. PAP every year until 2 regular PAPS. All depends on immune factor for each person. There is no HPV test for men only women. According to my Mayo doctor.
Hello dear, I think the other comments are good comments particularly don't google about it so much, but I share my story, maybe you find it helpful in some way. I'm about 59 and during my marriage always had a normal pap.
After I divorced and was later engaged to a man, within a year of having sex with him, I got HPV, but not any of the HPV strains that Gardasil protects. He casually mentioned to me, "oh yeah my exwife had HPV" he never bothered to share that information with me before he aggressively wanted us to start having sex..whatever..eventually I never married him nor any other man..
My OB told me that that kind of high HPV I had was asymptomatic and should disappear in time..and it disappeared in 2 years after it was first spotted. I went years with normal paps, then about 5 years ago my pap said that HPV Aptima was negative but there returned, and there was low grade dysplasia (LGSIL and NIL?) cells present so my OB did a biopsey (colposcopy) to ensure there was no cancer I guess. The colposcopy showed everything benine, HPV likely caused Koilocytosis..etc. She told me come back next year.
next year pap, showed HPV still but negative for all the HPV strains in the High Risk category (about 14) or whatever is protected by gardisil. BTW my OB told me the kind of HPV I had could be acquired by anyone, even those who got the HPV shot, and it usually goes away, and may be related to immune system challenges etc. I did get a second opinion from my other OB at John Hopkins. JH told me the same, I was fine, see ya next year.
Last year, the lab in my OB office did my pap analysis and said I have no HPV from the strains protected in Gardisel. However the OB office internal lab sent a deficient sample to LABCORP so LABCORP rejected it and said they were unable to analyze. I don't know to date if last year my low grade dysplasia turned into high grade because I missed a year! ugh...
anyway BECAUSE OF THIS, MY OB TOLD ME TO TAKE THE GARDISEL SHOT AT MY AGE 57, since I was considered having sex again with a mate. It was hard to find a place to give me the shots at my age. CVS would not do it due to my age. No medical provider agreed to do it not even my own OB. She told me insurance won't cover it and they were not allowed to give me the shot EVEN if I paid cash.. HOWEVER she told me it could help me get protected from the HPV strains that Gardisel protects. Finally Planned Parenthood gave me the shots last year, it cost me $1400 cash.
This year I just got my pap smear results back. It said Negative fo intraepithelial lesion or malignancy, NO endocervical component identified (this is good because it was present before). But is also said HPV Aptima Positive (before it was negative), but it also said negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy (which is good), it said all cellular parts were clearn all high risk types of HPV were negative..come back in a year.
I may ask JH for a second opinion, ONLY BECAUSE IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE A CONSULATION SO I CAN ASK OB TO EXPLAIN MORE, instead of all of this scary terminology, but then, it's ok, come back next year. I took the HPV shot at age 57 and maybe or maybe not, it was helpful..lol..but at least it made me feel more protected. My OB is so busy she hasn't responded to my portal questions..lol
I really don't know if the OBs all have adequate knowledge of this matter, or if it's time related, but I leave you with this...SEEK KNOWLEDGE TO UNDERSTAND YOUR OWN BODY SO YOU DON'T FALL THRU THE CRACKS. From what you wrote and my knowledge, and I summarized and left out all the medical stuff I know, IT SEEMS YOU ARE JUST FINE LIKELY. USE protection for other SDTS, and enjoy life daily until your body can't. (also I know I misspelled HPV vaccine aka Gardisel, etc. other terms..but you know what I mean..lol)
Omg! Your story is incredible. I suspected it would be difficult for me to get the vaccine. Didn’t know that expensive though. I’m going to discuss with my primary. I can guess what he’ll say.
I’ve just resumed sex with an old ex. It makes me nervous.
I'm glad some of my info was useful to you dear. BTW, Planned Parenthood charged I think $400 for a meaningless exam (a nurse asked me a bunch of questions), then I think each shot was about $300, so maybe my total was $1300. HOWEVER, they do give you a break if you meet financial need scales, supposedly. So you might get the shot for less than I did if you revealed your financial status. I was not willing to do so. Also, they told me that also the cost of the shots could go up after my first shot..lol..but it did not go up by the last shot. Also, I it seems there was a positive impact on the cells because in 2022 the questionable cells were present, but this past March 2024, about 8 months after I took the 3rd shot, I no longer have those questionable cells present. At least now I do feel protected against the 14 or so main strains protected against by the vaccine, Gardisel.. Good luck dear!
I've been diagnosed with every strain of HPV. This was 6 months ago. I am having a heavy foul smelling discharge and spotting lightly with blood. I am 64 and post menopausal. I see a new doctor in 7 days. My last doctor was male and never did one thing . I was already on medication for back spasms and depression fibromyalgia and high blood pressure. I am so scared of pain. I need to hear from someone please.
@b264 It's good that you decided to see a new physician. Since you are postmenopausal I've learned that spotting with blood isn't normal and should definitely be checked out. In my own case I was postmenopausal at age 67 and noticed spotting. I made an appointment with my gynecologist and he (yes, a male physician and very empathic) followed through with additional testing including ultrasound and then a D&C (dilation and curetage). The result for me was endometrial cancer (adenocarcinoma) caught at an early stage. My result doesn't mean that yours will be the same but when we, as women, have something show up that isn't normal we need to additional evaluations. Good for you for advocating for yourself. I am hopeful that your new physician will listen to your concerns and do a complete physical exam. Seven days from now for your appointment is very soon. I know all too well how difficult it is to wait. What do you like to do that can calm your pain and your nerves?
Thank you for replying. I play guitar and I like to do those diamond paintings. I'm just so tired all the time for no reason. You seem to be ok but how are you really doing? I've been in pain for one thing or another seems like most of my life. I can't take the sufferings of people and animals. That's what I'm scared of the most is dying in pain. What are you scared of if anything?. The way you respond you seem to be a very strong woman.
