Intestinal Metaplasia: What do you do to lower the risk of cancer?
Has anyone been diagnosed with intestinal metaplasia? What does your doctor recommend? I was just diagnosed and am very anxious about it because of the risk of cancer. Would like to hear your experience with it. Thank you.

My ex GI Dr. told me I might have stomach cancer and he sent me to an oncologist. The oncologist told me I have a better chance of getting prostate cancer than stomach cancer. He told me the 2 worst things I can do to myself is to drink booze and smoke. I avoided salty and smoked foods. I ate a lot of steamed chicken breast. I avoided acidic foods.
are you on the "no sweets" programme as well? I'm definitely new at all this and, upon examination, had a pretty horrible diet in the past :-/
I had Barrett’s esophagus in 2018. I watched my diet religiously and cut out spices, sweets and all acid. My last 2 EGD’s showed no signs of Barrett’s esophagus. I started to add back some sweets. I get scoped again in April 2024 to check for ulcers. I’m on a PPI omperzole to reduce acid so I hope there gone. My GI doc said I don’t have to cut out everything. Moderation is the key.
What do you recommend for those of us with insatiable sweet tooth? I find that adding a little bit of honey to plain Cream of Wheat is nice, but what else might there be? I've had the same diet virtually since birth & I'm a fish out of water when it comes to "healthy alternatives" haha
thank you! And I'm going to invest in some Healthwise coffee, too 🙂
Buy the book "the acid watchers diet off Amazon because it has great info and recipes.
thanks for that. Good luck with the 'scope in April. I am going in for mine next week and am a little nervous. Hopefully, things will appear to have improved (maybe even slightly?). Will keep you guys posted! Wish me luck
ok - well....? No metaplasia detected! I was put on Sucralfate twice daily and ate NOTHING flavorful for like four months. I am beyond happy and, while I can have a more normalized diet, I am also definitely tweaking it to satisfy higher health standards. No more soda, alcohol, super fatty foods for me!
PPI ‘s are only intended for short term use . If you Google it you’ll see why .
My Dr. said stay on the PPI for life due to stomach ulcers.
