After knee replacement surgery

Posted by beatricefay @beatricefay, Jun 16, 2016

Had left knee replaced 9 days ago. Right knee two years ago. Having a problem with inflammation so hard to bend knee and exercise. Trying to ice and raise knee above heart. Doctor suggested getting compression hose. Anybody have this experience and can offer suggestions. So tired all the time from pain interrupting my sleep and painkillers. My insurance refused to pay for the painkiller recommended by surgeon so have to take one with more opiates. That's frustrating. Two years ago it was covered but now too expensive for me to use. Seems the drug companies, not our doctors are determining what we use.

Same here. The other knee needs to be done but I’m not going to go through that, at least unless it becomes unbearable at a later stage. I’m 62.

My husband's golf buddy, who is in his 50, had his left knee replaced in November 2017. His employer has very good health insurance. He was able to go to the best surgeon who is good in robotic knee surgery! He had no problems with his TKR by the robot and only a few months he was able to play 2 round of 18 holes of golf in one day! He kept saying he wish he had it done sooner because he had endured 5 years of knee pain whenever he played golf. I don't think Medicare will pay for robotic knee replacement?

Why do you think it does not pay? Yes, Medicare does pay for it.

I am also scheduled for a revision on my right knee. I have had my current replacement for 19 years (am 61 now). I have been informed that the surgery is 3 hours (so longer than original) but that rehab should be no different. I am scheduled for Thursday so we will see how it goes!

Best wishes for a successful revision. I’m getting one on Oct 4. Please keep me in the loop of your recovery, pain and rehab. I’m worried. I’m 60 in 6 days. I had my first TKR for only 10 years. I played tournament tennis and I guess I wore it out. Dr. said the piece in the middle of the two metal pieces just disintegrated and my knee shifted sideways.

slapshoot1 thank so much for your reply. I’m not really sure how I found your answer but very grateful! ❤️

I agree about staying off the TKR. However, as an aside, I often (daily) feel a sharp twinge of pain in my TKR. I am 3 years post-op. The “twinges” started 2days after surgery. Have had the orthopedic surgeon check it out twice, new set of x-rays, plus an ultrasound. Nothing found. I’m puzzled and frustrated.

@daughter55 I would get a second opinion from a different orthopedic surgeon. Obviously the original would not want to admit that something was wrong from what he/she did. I have a friend who had problems and went two years in pain. It was the third orthopedic surgeon who finally diagnosed her problem and fixed it. She is great now.
I had my second TKR done last October and it is pain free. I do not have the flex I had hoped to have but it will do. I can even kneel on it, on a cushion.

@slapshoot1 Good luck with the revision. I presume the first one must have gone well since you went 19 years with it, so hopefully this one will too.

@evw100 from what I understand, robotic is just that the surgeon is guided by a robotic type of assistance. The knee does not differ, nor does the surgery really, it just helps in the placement, etc. so increases the success rate. I am sure insurance and Medicare pay for it. They paid for my custom made knee which must have been more costly.

Might try CBD for pain, is the inflammation due to infection?
