Vertigo - has anyone resolved the sudden onset of vertigo
I've recently acquired a case of apparent vertigo, and my ENT doctor offered no help other than physical therapy as treatment. I'm taking meclizine (aka Antivert) which helps somewhat, but I have significant imbalance even so. My loss of balance and dizziness lasts from the time I get out of bed, for about 90 minutes, after which it diminishes in effect, but I feel unsteady all day. Ginko biloba? Dramamine? TIA!

Nothing has helped and I forgot to mention in my response that besides doing a hearing assessment, the ENT Dr referred me to a therapist to teach me how cope with the Tinnitus! I am surprised by the connection between the Tinnitus and Vertigo. The 1st night my Vertigo started I called my Daughter and told her I would probably have to go to an ER. I was laying down and suddenly the wall in front on me started spinning horizontally and it was completely visible. When I sat up the same wall started spinning vertically in a visible form. This major episode never happened again, but I did some detailed research. It was at that point that I learned there is two different forms of Vertigo. One you can physically feel and one you can physically see.
I have done physical therapy for vertigo and it has helped a LOT! Also, the PT told me to sleep with my head elevated, and this also helps.
It is called the epley movement. ENT pt can help you. Needs to be done correctly to really help long-term.
I am vouching for the PT. It is all that saves me from my vertigo attacks. Mine was caused frim sudden hearing loss which I never got back. Ask for a PT who has experience with vertigo and the Epley or a similar technique. They have goggles you put on where they can tell which side to treat. They can also show you how to correctly perform the maneuver so that you can do it on your own. I strongly encourage you to go to the PT at least the first time. If settling the crystals does not do the trick, then your ENT can explore other causes after that has been ruled out.
Mayo Clinic ENT department has everything you need for help with vertigo. I did the test and really helped figure some things that trigger my problems. ENT pt specialist guided me thru the movements. They also do testing to determine which side is the problem so you can do your head stuff turning the correct way. Much better now but still have to do moving very slowly.
Dr. Foster is a well-known otolaryngologist. This is simply something for those who wish to try and resolve their vertigo at home, rather than going directly to the doctor or PT.
Many thanks for your comments! I'm puzzled as to why the only dizziness I feel now are for a few seconds when I lie straight down on the bed at night, and then for a few seconds when I sit up ready to stand to get out of bed. But, I don't have dizziness when I roll over in bed. I had that as long as 12 years ago, and it went away by itself. I think my overall motion balance when standing and moving has gotten worse, but I'm nowhere close to the risk point of losing balance and falling down. I feel highly slighted that my ENT doctor did not try the epley maneuver on me during my office visit. He rushed me out of the exam room in less than 5 minutes. Have not gone to PT as yet, but I do have a referral authorization slip to use.
So, meclizine (Antivert) and/or Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) were of no help to you? I'm in the process of getting hearing aids for the first time, but not sure if they will be helpful. I have approx a 35% hearing loss in each ear, equally. Did you find any helpful hints for your tinnitus? Some hearing aid mfrs claim their premium aids will help reduce tinnitus. BTW, thank you for your comments, very helpful for me to read and re-read.
What is Dr. Foster's first name or his/her website please?
Her name is Dr. Carol Foster. She is a Professor Emerita with the University of Colorado, who suffered from vertigo and developed what she called the Half Somersault maneuver. I do not know her and have no reason to promote this maneuver other than that it worked for me. 😊
