Loss of BMD in hips after taking Forteo or teriparatide?

Posted by lynn59 @lynn59, Mar 29 9:14pm

I’m scheduled to start a biosimilar to Forteo in a couple of weeks and I just read a post today from a woman who lost bone density in her hips after being on Forteo. I got interrupted and couldn’t find the post again, so I’m asking the question here as now I’m afraid to start. My T-score in my spine is -3.1 and my hips are -2.8. I’m borderline whether I need an anabolic and the only reason I’m doing it is because I downhill ski, as well as cross-country and backcountry skiing. I can’t afford to lose in my hips. My endocrinologist warned I may lose in my forearm, but she didn’t say anything about losing in my hips. Now I’m wondering if I should not start it and just go on a Actonel, Reclast or Prolia …. Or do nothing! This is all scaring me silly.

Drink some water too. If you can get a blood pressure cuff at the pharmacy, that can be reassuring. My blood pressure is like yours but I did fine 🙂

Ok. I’ll do that.
Thank you.
Starting at number 2 and working up.

Thank you
U am starting it this Monday.
I have that low blood pressure like you. Mine is 90 over 50 most of the time so I’ll eat salty things before and I like the idea of trying it in the morning. I would prefer to do the first one with someone here with me or at my docs office.
Thank you as always.
You are so supportive and much appreciated.

My blood is low normal. Usually 112/59. I’ll eat salty nuts and hydrate before I inject!

@lynn59 in my experience 112/59 is fine. That is high for me! But yes hydrate. Not sure you need the salty nuts but sounds delicious 🙂

@gently I would love to see the article on Tymlos vs Forteo and porosity. This raises the issues of bone density vs bone quality, and strength vs flexibility. Very interesting. I am particularly interested in the context of compression fractures, which will be hard to find!

Windyshores,
This article is not T vs F but elucidates the principle nicely. Still looking. It's a principle that applies to Tymlos as well.
You'd best never consider Forteo. Would you take Tymlos again.
"While TPTD increases porosity, it increases outer diameter and thickness of the cortical bone thereby increasing bone strength. "

I liked Tymlos! Side effects for two hours, dose flexible, excellent gains in DEXA. No fractures since 2021.

Hi! I’m just watching a video by Dr. Susan Ott that says it takes 3-5 years for the bone to completely mineralize after taking teriparatide. How long after starting Tymlos (which is similar) did it take before you saw improvement in your DEXA?

windyshores, you had uncomfortable side effects with Tymlos with a full dose early on. Were those effects limited to two hours. Now I'm curious if the terrible Forteo effects were in a two hour range. Would you say that the cessation of Forteo stopped the adverse effect within the 24 hour following.
You convinced (even) me about Tymlos' great benefit. I'm going to try a pen mid Forteo.

lynn59, the physicans guide says 3 months to mineralization without the "completely."

Hi @gently if you are going to do as what you said, how will you ever know its effectiveness? 🤔
