Struggling with Tymlos medicine

Posted by darla1 @darla1, Sep 1, 2023

Hello, I’m turning 55 this November , was diagnosed with late stage osteoporosis, started Tymlos 2 weeks ago, with immediate side effects from the very first dose. My dr has had me start with 80, 8 clicks. I’m 105 lb soak and wet. My bones hurt before I began Tymlos, now the pain has become excruciating in my bones, muscle weakness, heat palpitations after each dose, headaches that never go away, and change in my mental health.
I see my Dr for the first time since beginning Tymlos next week. Which I will discuss the issues I’m having.
Has anyone made it through the 2 years? Did the drug improve their bone density? I guess what I’m asking ,
Is this worth what I’m putting myself through mind, body, and soul?

@curious6, I have been on Tymlos for 10 months and found that the initial severe side effects waned with time. Now, they are tolerable and only last a short time after the injection. Best of luck to you!😊

Thank you. Did you start out with a full dose? Because I weigh so little, I’m concerned about taking so much right away. Did the side effects include dizziness?

@curious6 try a full dose and see. It isn't going to hurt you. It goes away quickly. I originally brought up the idea of low dose and ramping up for those of us who tried the full dose and were maybe going to quit. Ramping up is not necessary for everyone or intended simply to allay anxiety, but if that lets you start, that's a good thing. Try full dose and if you don't like that, a half dose. If you are really scared or sensitive, try two clicks but move up as fast as you can!

I expected side effects no matter what dose, and they do ease over time. But I also found they varied day to day. Unlike meds that are infused once or twice a year or even once a month, side effects go away in an hour or two. Dizziness was one of my first but faded quickly. Over two years it probably came back twice. That's just me.

@curious6 , I started with a full dose but the headaches and back pain were too severe so I dropped to 6 clicks for a month then 7 for a month then back up to 8. Decreasing the dose allowed my body to get used to the medication. Dizziness occurs after the injection, due to drop in blood pressure, but doesn’t last too long. As @windyshores states we are all unique individuals and respond differently both physically and emotionally.

Starting at a low dose (3 clicks) and increasing the dose by a click every four or five days made all the difference for me. I wouldn't have tolerated the full dose right away, and in a month, I was doing 6, which is fairly quick for a treatment supposed to last at least 18 months.
This gave my body the opportunity to get used to the side effects, which became more tolerable, and some even went away with time.

Thank you so much. I also don’t think I could tolerate the full dose at first . Having never used this, I am trying to figure out how the clicks work. Every time you turn the dial you hear a click? Do you inject the next day with the remaining medicine?

@curious6 once you inject, the pen goes back to zero. You can feel the clicks. In your situation I would suggest starting with three since you do not want to start with a full dose. This is all very flexible. Just remember that unlike infusions, Tymlos leaves your body very quickly. Half is gone in one hour. If you do a partial dose, refrigerate it so the pen lasts long enough.

Thank you! So the next day I use the medicine that I didn’t use the first day… and if I travel, I can bring the medicine with me and refrigerate it once I get to a destination?

The pen has a month's supply in it. You use whatever amount you set on the pen, each day, The pen goes back to zero after each injection.

If you are doing partial doses, use cold packs for travel so it lasts past 30 days.
