Peripheral Neuropathy Twitching?

Posted by wyp4251987 @wyp4251987, Mar 27, 2023

Hello, I was recently diagnosed with PN. I am experiencing twitching that started in my thigh and has expanded to include upper and lower body including my face. I have had an EMG/NC and was told it is not ALS but the twitching continues to cause anxiety. Anyone else experience similar challenge? I am a 61 yr old male.

I continue to experience twitching in various parts of my body that seem to be fairly consistent especially when at rest. Has anyone else experienced similar issue? I did have an EMG/NC on Feb 20th and was told I do not have ALS but do have PN moderate severity axonal, length dependent.
The twitching causes constant anxiety that is difficult to shake. Anyone else experiencing similar challenges?

Occasional twitches are part of my axonal PN. Sometimes I get a “storm” of electrical pulses, but usually only for minutes, and usually contained to legs/feet and arms/hands. They’re more annoying to me than painful, with only a rare one causing a couple of seconds of discomfort. We’re all different, maybe Gabapentin has helped my tolerance. Wishing you the best!

While I normally do not have problems with twitching, there is one exception. When first wake up in bed the morning and lie awake on my back, I can have involuntary twitching in my right shoulder. Goes away when get up and for rest of day. Occasionally may have same shoulder twitch a few times per day. Don't cause any distress and are very short-term.

I also have twitching. It can be concerning. I has anyone spoke to a Dr. about it? What did they say. When I mentioned it, they really did not have an answer.
At first I thought it was from my back but reading all your comments I now feel it may be from my neuropathy.
I tries cutting back on coffee but that really did not make a difference. It will get worse with anxiety. Other times it will not be there and I think I am fine and it is gone. Sadly, it comes back. I am trying to figure out if something triggers it.
Has anyone figured out a solution for this?

Welcome @kimba8138, Sorry to hear you are struggling to find answers. I don't think you are alone and I applaud you for seeking answers and learning what may help. The best thing we can do for ourselves is learn as much as we can about the neuropathy condition and what treatments are available that may help provide relief for the symptoms. Have you seen or been diagnosed with neuropathy by a neurologist?

I was diagnosed by a podiatrist. My primary suggested I see a ortho that specializes in the foot. He suggested I get a MRI.

I am not sure that one would call this twitching but here I go. Infrequently while lying on my back or either side, My leg will begin to move involuntarily which causes me to be awake hours or even the entire night. Also, infrequently, when laying on either side, in a fetal position, I will have electrical like tingling in my ankles and/or knees.

I have PN and occasionally get them…more so when I first started with PN. The fact that you have anxiety over it just fuels the twitching. Avoid caffeine, get plenty of sleep, cut back on sugars and exercise/walk if you’re able. It’ll likely subside as you move ahead.
Best wishes.
Steve

I read on this site under for the Neuropathy support group that many people had muscle twitching and spasms from to much B6. Anyone else have this issue?

@brotherchuckles80
It definitely sounds like you have restless leg syndrome and need medications or supplements and treatments that would help with this so you get better sleep at night.
