Has anyone had a solution to the ostomy Bag Ballooning and what can you do about it?

I have to go to England on a Business & Pleasure Trip where most of these bags are made. I will look around and see what is on the market in Europe. I know that the people there will not put up with this. We in this country put up with inferior products and pay a premium price for it...while the rest of the world are not like Lambs as the U.S. Citizens.

I use a 2 piece Convatec and I often need to burp it, when possible I try to accomplish outdoors and/or away from public and at home, my wife. There appears to be a vent but no-workie!!!

That is what my complaint is...after all these years, nobody has come up with a system that will stop this ballooning? Maybe they should hire some Teck Savy (Kids) People.

the built in vents have never, repeat never worked for me. not sure why they even make it. there is an Osteo EZ vent that can be applied to your pouch that appears to work better. google it.

The one member who recommended burping the bag is the standard practice of removing air, especially from closed ended pouches. The trick is, you have to hold down the wafer with one hand while you pull up on the tab on the bag with the other hand…that way you’re not pulling the entire appliance off your skin when you try and open it up to release the air. Another solution is to buy pouches that are open ended with the tail clip… That way you can empty the bag and air several times a day, as needed.

Welcome, @ravna. Helpful tips. Your description of burping the bag is very clear. May I ask what led to your having an ostomy?

Hi Colleen, I had several internal defects when I was born that necessitated the ileostomy at a week old, and urostomy at age 16.

I’ve had great results with the Coloplast bags. They have a filer and vent. They come with a sticker you can place over the vent for bathing.

Welcome, @barbwith3cats. Nice of you to join the group with helpful advice. How did you find the Ostomy group? How long have you been living with an ostomy?

I’m very new and still learning about Ostomy care. I had my surgery Feb 12th and hope for a reversal in July. I had my first attack of diverticulitis in October and even with IV antibiotics I grew sicker and sicker. The colostomy has really been a challenge and I am slowly working out products that work for me. I found this group when I was searching for advice online. I’m finding a lot of helpful tips and I’m happy to share my experience so far.
