Osteoporosis, Magnesium, and IBS

Is there anyone out there that has collagenous colitis and/or IBS and is having trouble with magnesium? I bought a bottle at the health food store that was supposed to be ok for people with CC/ IBS and I've had diarrhea for days. So, obviously stopped taking it. Anyone out there? This is so important because from what I understand, if your magnesium is low, the calcium is not getting to the bones which is pretty depressing. HELP!

@candy209 THank you for this information! Do you take yours during the day or bedtime? Do you take it with food or it's OK by itself?

I take it at bedtime or just after dinner with a little food. I have a sensitive stomach so they works better for me. If I get constipated I’ll take the magnesium oxide at dinner.

Hopefully someone can enlighten this chemist as she is obviously missing/forgotting something very basic. No matter what the form of either calcium or magnesium is in when taken, it does not remain in that form once it hits stomach acid. It gets converted to calcium ions or magesium ions. How fine the powder is does affect the rate of dissolution. Tums and Milk of Magnesia also act as antacids due to their chemical nature

I have microscopic colitis and osteoporosis. I have been on the diet recommended by Wayne Persky in his book, “Microscopic Colitis.” I have been on it nearly three weeks and have had no diarrhea! Highly recommend. See Facebook group on MC . CC is a subset of MC and treated the same. You will find (or can ask for) magnesium suggestions.

I am starting on Tymlos and share your concern about magnesium since this diet deleted some of the best sources from my diet. However, I am treating this as an elimination diet and slowly adding in foods to test for sensitivities.

Interesting. I was searching for a form that doesn’t cause diarrhea. According to this I am unlikely to succeed.

My response does not appear to be typical. But I did start with a VERY limited diet and almost opposite of my normal “healthy” Mediterranean diet (fruits, veggies, legumes, whole grains, olive oil, chicken and fish).

Initially, NO gluten, dairy eggs or soy, low fiber, low fat, no raw veggies and no fruit. I also quit eating chicken, but not turkey.
That left beef or pork, green beans, white rice, mushrooms, GF matzos, etc. I did so well that I started adding one food at a time, similarly to the way the Low fodmap diet does, after the first week.

I eat five to six small meals or snacks/day, which keeps me from being hungry. I now also eat blueberries and honeydew, canned greens,
eggs, and some Imagine boxed soups which are great for mixing with greens, rice and mushrooms — and/or ground beef. But I recommend very small portions of each.

I also use almond milk and eat GF rice cereal.

@judithideker Good to know. I use the Fairlife (Lactose free) but I wonder if Almond would be better for me. I also east GF rice cereal! I get it at my health food store. I have already ordered the books on Amazon. I will get them on Monday! Thanks so much for this. I also read the reviews of the book on Amazon and they were all pretty much excellent reviews!
