Evenity and side effects: What helps joint and muscle pain?

Posted by rjkesal123 @rjkesal123, Feb 13 12:40pm

Hi All,
I received my first Evenity injection two weeks ago. Everything was going well, did not even have injection site pain. But the last couple of days I have had joint and muscle pain especially in my neck and upper back, Lower back and arms. I've read the drug peaks around 7 to 14 days. I am wondering if this is normal, has anyone else experienced this and if these side effects subside? Is there anything you take before or after the injection to relieve this pain? It is very uncomfortable. Thank you!

I’v had 1 injection of prolia. Can I safely switch to evenity? To many side effects on prolia.

That's what I did. I started Evenity about 8 months after my one and only Prolia injection.
It's worth discussing with your doctor.

As I’ve posted before, I have been pretty side effect free with Evenity (and with Forteo and Tymlos).
I’m having my 10th injections this morning. While there, I will discuss with nurses how to approach Reclast. It’s been suggested on here (windyshores), that the patient can ask for IV hydration and a reduced amount of the drug.
I will report back what the nurses tell me.

@susanfalcon yes to hydration (which can be by mouth; my kidneys are the reason for IV), and also a slow infusion. Docs may or may not agree to a lower "test" dose. I have health conditions that require that. If the test dose goes okay, I will then have a higher dose. Just want to make clear the idea of a lower "test" dose is related to medical necessity. Let us know if your doc agrees.

During my cancer treatment, my endo wouldn't even prescribe Reclast (which is usually given with those cancer meds) due to my heart condition. That is how I ended up in this mess! He is nervous about it now, hence the test dose. If dose remains low, it will be every 3 months, not annual.

10th set of Evenity injections was uneventful.
I asked nurses about my future with Reclast. They said yes to hydration - by mouth. Yes to a slow infusion. No to a smaller dose.
They also said to start alternating Tylenol and motrin two days before.
Also, the disaffected endocrinologist ordered blood work for May, but he didn’t order any bone turnover markers. I will call his office and ask that those be added to orders.
DEXA in May. Drumroll.

Since I wrote about side effects 17 days after the first injections, I had a bit of swelling in my bottom lip (that's in addition to the cold sore). My increased appetite didn't change and it continues to this day.

Yesterday I had my second set of injections in the abdomen, and had the same injection site swelling. It went away overnight. Within a few hours of the shots, I had some inflammation in my joints, and a mild headache. Both were gone by the time I went to bed. Today, I feel really tired, and have serious brain fog.

Just want to share some news. I'm two months into Evenity. I had a new DEXA done a couple of days ago, and was amazed by the result. My t-score for my spine showed a gain of 7.2% when compared to the results of my previous scan in January 2023. My hip stayed the same. Both scans were done on the same machine.

I've changed my diet, and I'm doing OP targeted exercises. I also had my one and only Prolia injection last year. The BMD increase could be the result of all or some of these things, though the majority of the gains have to be from Evenity. Needless to say, I'm pleased to know that it's proving to be effective for me.

Even if I were having bad side effects and had to stop treatment now, I'd be happy with the 7.2% gain.

I had my third set of injections on Tuesday, and I am completely wiped out and so sleepy. For those of you who've had this side effect, did it start with your first injections, and did/does it happen to you with every set? Of course, it varies from person-to-person. I'm just curious to know.

That happened with my first three injections-fell asleep on the 1.5 hour ride home.
Didn't happen hte last time, perhaps because we went for a walk and something to eat afterwards?

My first infusions took about 20 minutes with the only reaction being a combination of fever blisters, mild rosacea like blotching and eczema along with joint pain and mild headaches. The second infusion involved 2 nurses (I am hoping) on each side counting down - 1, 2, 3 - and both infusions finished in a minutes or so. This caused immediate dizziness, doubled the headaches and joint pain and my face became a flaming hot mess of blisters, blotches and itching. Rheumatologist stated to continue the infusions and my dermatologist increased the valtrex. For my third infusion I have spoken to the infusion clinic and requested the slower 20 minute infusions only. If not, I am finished with Evenity.

Who could blame you? That sounds dreadful.
