Osteoporosis, Magnesium, and IBS

Posted by yogagirl57 @yogagirl57, Mar 9 5:33pm

Is there anyone out there that has collagenous colitis and/or IBS and is having trouble with magnesium? I bought a bottle at the health food store that was supposed to be ok for people with CC/ IBS and I've had diarrhea for days. So, obviously stopped taking it. Anyone out there? This is so important because from what I understand, if your magnesium is low, the calcium is not getting to the bones which is pretty depressing. HELP!

I found this recent article on Magesium from the LA times fitting. Take enough and you can have a colonoscopy.

Good morning Susan! I did not order the magnesium because I have IBS and afraid that my GI wouldn't be able to handle it. I hear that the best magnesium for people with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) is Magnesium Glycinate. Do you take Dr. Mccormick's collagen? It is fortified with Fortibone which is the key ingredient and supposed to be good for our bones.

Magnesium Glycinate is the only magnesium that I can tolerate and it is also recommended for those with osteoporosis. My understanding is that some magnesium, like magnesium oxide, is not absorbed well in your body and therefore just moves on to the colon where it ends up being expelled, hence diarrhea. I have tried several brands of magnesium glycinate and the one I like the best is made by Quinol. I take it at bedtime because it helps me with my sleep. However, if you take it during the day, it does not make you sleepy but just a relaxed feeling. I hope this helps.

If you read nutrition book by the Caltons, which is recommended by Dr. Lucas, they say Magnesium Oxide and Citrate are fine, I take both and had an increase in Dexa (still had fracture later). I think the magnesium choice depends upon whether you need or don’t need a laxative effect.

If you don’t want laxative effect, use something other than citrate or oxide.

I have IBS and you have to be careful with the type of magnesium. Oxide and Citrate both effect your bowels. Glycine is the most absorbed and should not give you trouble. It’s more calming and well absorbed. Many take it for the calming effect and for sleep. If you google the different types you can see. If I get constipated my doc says take either oxide or citrate.
Hope you feel better.

@candy209 THank you for this information! Do you take yours during the day or bedtime? Do you take it with food or it's OK by itself?
