Mild Case of Macular Degeneration Starting

Posted by dablues @dablues, Dec 18, 2023

I just had my eye exam and was told that I was starting Macular Degeneration. My mom had it and am wondering is this hereditary. I'm 82 now. The doctor said that it is mild and there is no need to do anything this year. I am wondering should I pursue this further?

My doctor told me I was just starting macular degeneration in one eye. He suggested I start using Bausch & Lomb’s PreserVision Areds 2, which is over the counter. He said clinical trials have proven it helps to slow down the progression of age-related macular degeneration.

I think all the eye doctors recommend AREDS. Mine did and I followed their instructions. Nobody told me of the possible side effects, of which there are many. If you’ll search this forum, you’ll find a whole thread on “AREDS Side Effects”. I recommend reading that and doing some due diligence before you buy any “eye vitamins”. I suffered side effects for a long time before figuring out it was the AREDS that was causing it. I won’t go into it here because it’s all on the other thread. But it’s been exactly a year since I stopped taking the AREDS.

Is there evidence that taking melatonin, lutein, and zinc would have harmful side effects related to Age Related Macular Degeneration? Same question goes for slowing cataract growth. Thank you.

I haven’t read anything or had any experience with taking vitamins for cataracts. But I would expect any side effects that the vitamins may cause an individual would be the same no matter why you were taking it. And, like I said in the post you responded to, there is a long thread with many posts from several different individuals about their experiences with and side affects of AREDS. I think some of them posted that they took the individual vitamins rather than the vitamins as a combination in brands like Preservision. But I wasn’t one of them, so I can’t speak to that other than I don’t have any confidence in vitamin supplements. In one of my posts on the AREDS Side Effects, I provided an article that pretty much explains my reasoning for my opinion on that.

I have not heard of a problem with Melatonin. If you have information, please share.
