Pre-colonoscopy instructions

Pre-colonoscopy instructions
I'm glad that both doctors with whom I've had a colonoscopy did not request a liquid only diet the whole day before the colonoscopy (they even let me eat once slice of white bread for dinner); nor did the surgeon who did my LAR; he even encouraged me to eat some protein at dinner time.

Better safe than sorry!
Polyps are supposed to grow slowly. My first polyp was discovered Oct. 26, 2023. I had a transanal resection on Dec. 17, 2022, and the polyp had almost doubled in size according to the surgeon.
I saw my surgeon early in Oct. 2023; the anoscopy showed nothing, since the surgeon did not mention anything. Then my second surgeon did a finger exam and didn't feel anything a couple weeks later. I had a colonoscopy on Nov. 28, 2023, and there was a polyp touching the area that had been radiated less than a year before. The doctors were alarmed.
So who knows. Have that colonoscopy and gain some peace of mind.

Yes. I will have it and pray there’s nothing bad. Of course, that’ll mean continuing the search for what’s wrong.

I saw this topic and I can agree with the pre colonoscopy prep..
I don’t do very well with it..it makes me nauseous after the first bottle..I’m overdue with my next colonoscopy though…the last one they found and cut out several polyps and I have had a history of them..my first colonoscopy they did at Walter Reed and they removed 13 polyps that day.. and my prep was just adequate…on my last colonoscopy I became dehydrated the morning of and the heart was pounding very rapidly….my sympathy and wishes for a good colonoscopy for you🙏❤️‍🩹

Well, the instructions from my gastroenterologist say no food the day before the procedure, however, the instructions with the prep liquid, which is some kind of sodium magnesium solution, say that I can eat a light breakfast the day before the procedure! Then, I drink that solution. I drink another bottle the next morning, though I don’t think that will be possible, as I have to be at the hospital at 8:00 a.m.and it’ll take me 45 minutes to get there.

Yes, Colonoscopies are too important to not do an excellent prep. I looked up the Boston Bowel Prep Score and 9 is the best score. I have had four previous colonoscopies (not at Mayo) and the reports only said that my prep was "good". That does not correspond to a score of 9 but lower!
As I said, I found the Mayo Prep easier because starting a low fiber diet with daily dose of MiraLAX 7 days before seemed to reduce the buildup in my colon.
And the 4-liter prep came with lemon flavoring, so it really did not taste that bad. I had to drink 12 cups day before and 4 cups day of which is doable.
And they found 3 pre-cancerous polyps (2mm, 10mm, 12mm) after 5-years from my last colonoscopy.
Actually, I find the diet before a PET scan to be harder because one must avoid sugar and carbs.

Did they remove the polyps and that was all that was needed?

Yes, they removed all three polyps and sent to pathology. Each one had a different histology and were pre-cancerous. They also found patchy areas of granular mucosa, so they took biopsies for microscopic colitis. That was negative. I had excellent prep which allows for better colonoscopy! I do another colonoscopy in three years, usual time frame for my type results.

My instructions from the gastroenterologist said to follow what they tell me and NOT what the prep bottle says.
I got up at 4am so that I could finish the prep and have time for it to act and then go to hospital.
It is to your benefit to follow precisely the instructions given you by your GI. What they are able to see and therefore remove is dependent on how good your prep is.

Oh, it hasn’t happened yet. It was scheduled for April 10, however, I got the billing information and discovered my part of the cost was outrageous. I then discovered the cost was thousands more than before due to it being in a hospital instead of the ambulatory center next door. I thought I was in the hospital last time. Anyway, to reduce my cost, I rescheduled and now it’s not until the end of May. I’m not thrilled about it, but I’m not in a position to pay that much right now. I intend to call most days to see if they’ve had a cancellation.

This is interesting and I hope changes the guidelines. If we can indeed eat a little something I think that would make the prep so much easier! I get nauseous from chugging down the drink on an empty stomach. Even to allow a few crackers, an egg or buttered toast would make it more tolerable.

The new prep solution I have is different from all that mix up stuff i had with Gatorade I had last time. It’s a liquid solution which is about 10 ounces, then a couple of glasses of water within the next hour, What complicates it for me, is that I have type 1 diabetes and must manage my blood sugar during this time, i wear a pump, but still it’s extremely stressful.
