Coughing a lot after lung cancer treatment. Don't know why

Posted by Donna @stimey60, Mar 16 11:26am

I have lung cancer stage 3A . Been through the chemo and had surgery.
It's been about 5 months now. I never coughed before , yes I was a smoker for 52 years.
But I find myself coughing alot, well some days nothing other days all day.
I don't understand why
Has anyone else had this?

And smoking burns little holes in your clothes! Here in Minnesota, one gets to go outside to smoke....that should be an incentive to stop but people do not!!!!

I know for me it was so addictive and I'm sure that's what happens to most people. But you know what always made me angry was drug addiction was given more respect then smokers. Quit smoking is hard and people need help, they just say quit yeah right. Tell a druggy to just quit . Well we all have our own demons.

No I quit after I was diagnosed. I think some of it is because I have allergies as well so the nasal drip does not help.
Thank you so much
I wish you a wonderful like as well

My husband visited pulmonologist as recommended by oncologist due to still coughing a couple of months past Lobectomy. Pulmonologist gave him cause of steroids, stronger nasal spray for post nasal drip, and stronger antihistamine. Also got humidifier and sugar free cough drops. We’ll see if there’s improvement.

Are you feeling any better?

Yes I started taking antihistamines and the cough has gotten better thank you. And plenty of cough drops. I'm not really to worried about it. I think it's allergies.
But thanks for the info

Agreed. Nothing worked for me either until I was laid up in the hospital for a week at the time of my diagnosis. I'd buried my mom 25 years after she quit smoking and an extended family member 30 years after she quit. I felt hopeless trying to quit and wished there was a Betty Ford Clinic for tobacco.

The stigma surrounding tobacco addiction kills.

Yes I had that as well. I could not lay down flat for months. It really scared me, but I found out later that it's pretty normal. Mayo is very bad about doing any followup with patients. It does get better, it just takes time

Glad to hear that it got better over time. Here also its the same, after
surgery same as Mayo. Its just a month after i got surgery on 13 feb and
now my chemo will start on 21st March. Apparently, they do not start chemo
until 1 month is completed and you are healed. I still have dry cough and
have some difficulty speaking but has reduced considerably. But, for last
four day i am getting rash on either my thigh or leg itchy but it goes away
after a few hours and mild headaches to.. scared so will tell the doc when
i go this thursday about it.

I'm in MN I go to the original Mayo clinic. I had 2 boughts of chemo before surgery and then they did surgery 6 weeks later. I was suppose to have three rounds but could only stand two, I had every reaction there was to the chemo. I won't do it again. Make sure you ask what all the reactions are to the chemo and what you should do
They are not real good about giving you info before or after. They seem to be on the pain but nothingelse. Write stuff down. I don't know what the rash could be I would ask the doctor

I agree with you. They didnt tell much other than nausea but they have
given me a booklet which has care instructions n tablets to take in case of
nausea diarrhea constipation etc. I will still ask then n i have looked
through the internet also. Though doc told me that there was no need to
isolate and asked me to eat regular food. Love.
