I need help to control type 2 Diabetes

Posted by salliesallie @salliesallie, Feb 29 10:16am

Hello, I was very recently diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes by my primary care doctor. I still need more test before I see the Endocrinologist. I am anxious about living with Diabetes and the changes that will occur. Both my Father and two brothers had Diabetes. All three are no longer living. I know that I need to calm down and wait until I get instructions from the Endocrinologist. I will post again after the test.

@kenag

I, too, was recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Had no idea until my lab work came back from a routine physical. My A1C was about 9.7. And, like you, I was very anxious. So much so, I was afraid to eat and lost 8 pounds that first week. I was already eating fairly well, at my ideal weight, and was exercising at least five days a week, so it came as quite a surprise. I was facing taking Ozempic and Metformin since weight loss and exercise weren't really options for me. But with the help of a CGM, I was able to determine which foods affected my glucose level the most and when exercise would help the most. I'm only on metformin now and was able to get my A1C down to 6.5 in the first three months after diagnosis. And I really don't think I'm "missing out of life" (though I miss those sushi rolls!).
So, please, don't despair. There's so much support out there for you. And there's plenty you do to take charge and manage your diabetes. I fully understand why you're anxious right now. But I have every confidence that, in a few months, you'll have it all under control and you'll live a long healthy life.

My A1c dropped pretty quick with 2 months of mounjaro and metformin. My insurance now denies the mounjaro but using Libre 11 blood sugar monitor for a couple months helped me see what foods tend to elevate my bs. Good luck ! I have also found Jardience was helpful but I had side affects

I've been on two Metformin delayed release and diet it works well if i limit carbs that is the secret most people think if they take a drug like metformin that you can eat whatever you want. "YOU CAN'T" I'm Italian so pasta was a main meal for most of my life until 8 years ago I like bread but if I eat bread and pasta I gain weight period. There's no getting around the diet change you must reduce carbs eat more fat but still must watch caloric intake but once you start to lose weight you can exercise more and lose more weight. Just break the carb cycle sugar and processed grains are not healthy for us don't listen to main stream medical advise telling you to eat more whole grain products don't they process a little slower but won't lower you're blood sugar enough. Good luck on your new journey in healthy eating.

A lot depends on your age, overall health and dietary needs. If you are overweight, losing weight can be beneficial. I found the fastest way to shed pounds was reducing carbohydrates. Ketogenic diet is one way to do that.

Be sure to request a fasting full blood panel to check cholesterol, liver and kidney function as well as your A1c (long term blood sugar) and a urine test to see if you have any protein in your urine. All of this may affect how your endo treats your diabetes.

Reducing carbs, drinking water, getting exercise (walking is enough) and stopping eating after 7pm or so will help possibly greatly.

Get a glucose monitor, test yourself in the AM before .aking your breakfast choices. Journal what you eat and how much, and check your glucose again 2 hours later. This will give you an idea of how insulin resistant you are. The ADA is still stuck on low fat, high carb diets to treat diabetes. I feel this is misleading.
Eating healthy fats (no Veg oils, seed oils, canola etc) reducing processed foods. Reducing carbs , increasing fiber, took my A1c and lbs down. Don't freak out. This disease takes a long time of unchecked living to do major damage and you can turn a lot of it around. Do not wait for your endo to make lifestyle changes, though

I'm on Farxiga, similar. I get thirsty, so keep hydrated. I make sure to shower regularly and use Antibacterial Dove bodywash. No issues, personally
