At what age do you stop driving?

Posted by cathy58 @cathy58, Feb 19 9:46am

I am 65 and since November 2023 I have had some pretty good health issues and have had cataract surgery. My daughter who does not live with me has been driving my car so if I needed to go somewhere her or one of my grandchildren would take me. So now she doesn’t really think I should be driving anymore because now I’m on oxygen. Do I give up driving and sell my car? What would you do?

I absolutely know what you are talking about. I am moving from a large-ish city with totally inadequate services for seniors. And even in the state I’m moving too…it completely depends on the City. The Parks and Recreation Department in the medium size city I am moving to is fabulous and offers so much for seniors. Yet the neighboring large city where my third daughter lives in the same state has so little. I may start a conversation trail at some point where we can list cities with superior senior services.

i believe that sounds like a great idea. for all seniors to check on.

Hi Cathy58!
Age 65 is young! I am 77 and I still drive and drive well too. I am a little nervous in a lot of traffic since you just don't know what the next car to you may do so I drive early in the morning when there is less traffic. My husband is 82 and he drives wonderfully! Plus he can park so well too! It's mainly a personal decision. However, you never know when what or whom you have been relying on may not be available. Also keep in mind that buses and taxi's are often not safe. At least they aren't in Washington State where I live. The buses are full of homeless here and taxi's are often driven by people who are high on drugs!
Pray about it and God will direct you to the right decision!

Keep yourself independent period- one has to be careful as a parent when they start to get older and I'm talking 80'S most people are still in the work force @ your age I was until 70+ in my humble opinion your car situation with your daughter and brands sounds more of a super convenience & savings for them - don't let anyone dictate when how and where you go you'll know yourself when not to step out in your vehicle still paying the insurance taxes & up keep?

You are so right about driving early and not in bad weather! You are being very sensible and safe. My husband and I go shopping only on Mon and Tues. mornings since all the drug addicted homeless and criminals are still passed out from the night before so it's safer. Plus there is less traffic and people in the stores. We don't drive at night either. We live 15 miles north of Seattle WA . Seattle's crime rate which is very high is reaching into our neighborhood. Murders have increased; mostly at night. Cars are being stolen right and left. Luckily, we have a car alarm. Also our police still arrest the bad guys. In many areas now, the police won't arrest the bad guys!

I disagree, many people don't know when to quit driving. We had a man in our town who was in his 90's and drove through the dry cleaners window. Not everyone has all their facilities and think they can still drive when the can't.

unfortunately a lot of people here are missing the point. @cathy58, there is very legitimate reasons why she should stop driving her car. and why her daughter is worried about her driving while on oxygen. i said it here before. THEY DO NOT put you on oxygen for shits & grins. Cathy says she has COPD. her daughter is not being mean. she's very concerned about her. and if something were to happen to Cathy or another person. everyone here would be saying, WHERE was her family. WHY didn't they say or do something. BUT, NO. everyone here is saying. YOU have the right to continue to drive. they say i'm older than you. from their 70s up into their 90's. good for you. UNTIL you have that 1 accident. and that's ALL it takes. quit being selfish. and think of your family and friends. and the person in the other car. and their families. d 🏳️‍🌈

I agree Danny, Our lawyer drew up a statement in our power of attorney that says when our family decides we can no longer drive, we agree to allow them to take our keys away ( not the exact language but you get the drift) .
