Tymlos vs. Evenity

Posted by eliz4142 @eliz4142, Mar 8 2:31pm

Hi all. I experienced a compression fracture at L1 about 4 weeks ago and this is how I learned I have osteoporosis. I'm "only" 57 and, after having a lot of blood work done, there is no explanation for my bone loss. I was adopted, so I don't have a lot of information about my genetics. Seems it's just an unusual (though not unheard of) situation. Since I've experienced a fracture already, my doctor has advised me that I need an anabolic agent. I'm trying to decide between 24 months of daily Tymlos or 12 monthly injections of Evenity. The doc assures me both are really effective. Evenity seems to have some serious (though unlikely) side effects, but definitely seems like a more palatable regimen. Any thoughts or experiences that might help me decide would be appreciated! Thank you!!

Hi eliz4142,

I was 58 when I found out I had pretty server osteoporosis. Luckily, no breaks. Evenity and Tymlos are the top two drugs for osteoporosis when it comes to performance and fast acting. If you have low T-scores in your hip, you might choose Evenity over Tymlos as it works better in the hip area. While I'm not a doctor, I did put together a presentation with my learnings through my journey. Here is the section on the various medication solutions including Evenity and Tymlos. https://youtu.be/Z4uXAsnhSaA?si=cI8Pj7jEcTrdD7g6&t=1648

BTW, I chose Evenity and am currently on Prolia.

Good luck!
Mike

And no, I'm not getting paid for any of the work I have done and I don't make money on YouTube. Those are not my ads. I'm just giving back to the community that helped me. 🙂

@eliz4142 I did Tymlos first and am now on Evenity. I was under the impression that that sequence was possible, but not the other way around. I don't know if that is true, though I have only seen studies on Forteo (similar to Tymlos) before Evenity.

I read the studies on cardiovascular risks with Evenity and there was no difference between Evenity and placebo. There was a small difference between Evenity and alendronate (Fosamax) but it was theorized that might be because alendronate was very slightly protective.

Tymlos is good for spine (so is Evenity). I have several spinal fractures. Tymlos is a bone builder, Evenity is a bone builder the first months and then more anti-resorptive. I liked Tymlos because the dose on the pen is adjustable. I could not handle a full dose at first so started low and moved up. My doc agreed with this. I am sensitive to meds.

eliz,
I can only report on my experience with Evenity. I had my 10th injections last week.
I have been side effect free other than after the first injections I felt fatigued the day after.
I was terrified to start Evenity, but it has been okay. Everyone is different.
As I have said on here before, I have transferred my anxieties to
Reclast which I start in May.

@susanfalcon love this "I have transferred my anxieties..." That describes this journey for many of us. Serial transferring of anxiety to the next med! But they ARE helping us!

Hi, I can share about Evenity. My osteoporosis started when I was 59. Took a once a week pill for one year. The following bone density test was worse. My doctor highly recommended Evenity, how this drug strengths your bones.
I started 10 months ago. No serious side effects except headaches. Well my current bone density was a lot worse. In fact its now under Frank osteoporosis. 33% T score 4.3. Very bad, if I fall I'm screwed. So beyond upset fighting to get this drug covered , high co-pays. Family history yes, my Mom had osteo but later in life (80's).

One thing I had a hysterotomy at 48, took hormone patch for 10 years. Once I got off the patch is when my bones started to weaken.
Wish I had better news. I'm going holistic for Osteo.
