Does anyone have DISH and/or OPLL?

Posted by langteach @langteach, Aug 5, 2011

After a recent MRI and CT, I have been diagnosed with DISH and OPLL of the cervical spine. These conditions mean that I have large flowing osephytes on one side of my spine and tendons turning into abnormal bone on the other side of my spine. The doctor wants to complete a multi-level fusion from C-3 to T-1 in a few days. Could anyone comment on the recover from multi-level fusions of the cervical spine? I worry about becoming disabled or paralyzed. I am a schoolteacher and deal with 13 yr old students.
Thank you for any advice.

Being in the medical field doesn’t always help. I’m a holistic RN so do all I can with natural remedies. I had a car accident that presumably got this going.
What kind of shots? Most of my pain is in one area, so that’s a consideration.
Happy Thanksgiving!

And there’s nothing wrong with being holistic. I think that’s a good way to approach things at first, but sometimes we have to resort to medical procedures.

I am recovering from surgery on a bone spur that grew into my throat causing Dysphasgia. The bone spur was caused by DISH, a disease I now live with. It's been 3 weeks since the surgery and I am healing well and increasing my ability to swollow. Before the surgery the Dysphasgia caused me to lose a lot of weight. I am still weak but as I eat better my strength is coming back. It is a tough surgery so you'll have to weigh the benefits. So far I am glad I did it.

Well. There are two entries today for somebody having bone spur removed from their throat area. As I told the other person I have read of this happening, but I have never had anybody talk about it.
She seems maybe a little further on after surgery than you, but make sure you go read what she said, and have a good team to help you get back to bit more of a normal life. This disease is an awful disease, but we are all living with it and having to make adjustments to take care of it.

I’m glad that you feel like you’re getting stronger and I hope you continue doing so.🙏

My wife had DISH of her anterior cervical vertebrae. A board certified spine surgeon removed it & fused the three vertebrae due to the poor quality of her disc.

Her pain was difficult with the DISH & resolved with the removal of the excess bone. Of course she had post operative pain, but it was manageable.

I have been told that they don't do surgery on dish, where did you go?

I tried to have the injections in my back and neck but it hurt more than the dish. Did anyone get sedated? I was also told to have a neck fusion done but why would I need to have more of my spline immobilize?

My wife had anterior cervical DISH, which was removed & C-4 through C-6 were fused. She has done wonderful. Her DISH was impinging on her esophagus so the surgery was necessary.

I imagine the decision to operate has to do with the size & location of the DISH growth. ☮️

Her surgery was in Springfield, IL but her surgeon, Dr. Williams, is now in LasVegas, NV.

I have had radio frequency ablations done in my back, and I do get a slight sedation for that. They give me about 2 mg of versed. It takes the edge off when you’re having it done. You do have to have a driver for your way home. I have also had epidurals done as well. I have not had any surgery as of yet. I am in my mid 50s ,not sure how old everybody else is , but I am not looking forward to this getting worse.
Praying for everyone here. Everybody’s been through too much with this disease. 🙏
