Swallowing
Can you forget how to swallow?
Recently I’d say over the last month or so I have been having some issues. But the most anxiety producing is the swallowing problem I seem to be getting/have.
It happened again last night a few times while trying to eat.
The food gets to the back of the throat and I can’t perform the act of swallowing. It’s like the brain forgot to signal the act of swallowing.
When it first started happening I thought it was just a fluke because I was able to swallow with the water. I didn’t think that would happen again.
Well. It happened 3 times last night. I stopped eating after a while of that.
I have a neurologist appointment coming up.
Does this happen to senior citizens? I’m 56.
Thanks for your time.

Hi, Nemo1.
I, too, have had issues with swallowing and talking. I would suddenly choke while drinking liquid and would feel tongue tied and unable to speak properly at times.
It does all seem to be CNS/PNS linked (small fiber/autonomic).
I agree that doctors quickly prescribe mediations for symptoms and do not spend time getting to root cause.
Your neurologist can also do a swallow study, in addition to a gastroenterologist.
Your neurologist may be able to order a sleep study and depending on the results, follow up with gastroenterologist/ENT for treatment and therapy. Getting the swallow test should be able to be done faster due to your issues with swallowing. You do not want to choke. A safety backup could be buying a Lifevac in case of choking (I was thinking of getting that myself).
Hello dlydailyhope,
Swallowing issues are so anxiety producing. I’m scheduled to see a new gastroenterologist who was voted ‘top doc’ about 13 years consecutively (in May) because my present doctor may still be on leave in April to evaluate the swallowing. I’m not sure where mine stems from as I have not had the biopsy for the small fiber (yet). Does a dermatologist do the skin biopsy to rule in/out small fiber neuropathy? Also, I have not had a recent cervical MRI, just nerve studies that indicated problems. I hope the neurologist visit in March addresses the cervical and thoracic symptoms. We shall see. I have a neuromuscular doctor scheduled for June. I scheduled that months ago.
Sorry, I meant swallow study. My original neurologist recommended I get it done when I told him about swallowing issues. Neurologists can order them and depending on results, refer you to a gastroenterologist or ENT for treatment and therapy. Autonomic nervous system controls heart, breathing and digestion and cervical nerve damage could be causing your swallowing problem. I a separate post, I mentioned I was diagnosed with biliary dyskinesia yesterday and this may be tied to nerve damage (gallbladder only releasing 7% bile when it should be a minimum of 35%-40%). This is a functional/motility/muscle issue where my body is not responding to nerve signals.
My neurologist did my SFN biopsy. I strongly suggest finding a top orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the spine to assess your cervical spine asap. I wasted 3 years with a neurologist testing everything and not treating anything. I then went to an orthopedic doctor who only wanted to focus on my lumbar stenosis. As soon as I met with the top spine surgeon, he did updated MRIs and immediately diagnosed my c5c6 cervical spondylitic myelopathy spinal cord compression and injury based on MRIs and symptoms (he really listed to my long list of symptoms). He recommended ACDF surgery immediately to prevent further damage and stabilize my cervical spine.
If I had to prioritize what is most important for you to address is your cervical spine (get updated cervical MRI and ask for an urgent appointment with a good spine surgeon who will listen to all of your symptoms). You may need surgery to prevent permanent damage/injury. Then you can follow up with the neurologist and gastroenterologist for testing/treatment/monitoring. Addressing your spinal cord and cervical issue is a 911 that cannot wait longer than March! When I met with my new spine doctor, it took less than 1 month from the first appointment to surgery.
I will ask for that. Thank you so much. I am more confident now to ask for it. I knew I had to but I will make that priority over the other.
🙏🏻 thank you
So, if I understand, the neurologist can order the swallowing tests THEN refer to gastroenterologist? Because my neurologist referred me directly to him. Since her appointment is sooner than his, should I ask her for it? I think you will say yes. Just confirming your thoughts and my understanding.
Thank you!!!
