Forteo vs. Tymlos: Which did you choose?
I have to make a decision on Forteo vs. Tymlos and am not sure what to choose. Forteo has been around a lot longer, but has to be refrigerated. Tymlos only around 1 1/2 years but is shelf stable and seems to have less side effects and less issues with calcium. Can anyone offer their perspective? Thank you!

@nme1985 from those charts, it looks like the only signficiant change- and a big one- is improvement in your spine from -2.7 to -1.9 in two years. How did you accomplish that without meds? Do you have fractures that are throwing off the DEXA?
I hope you can do Tymlos daily, at lower dose if necessary, rather than a few times a week. Your endocrinologist can guide you. If you want alternative approaches, since your scores are not bad at all, you could meet with Keith McCormick (he is listed online) or read his books.
I take supplements…do Pilates and lift four pound weight everyday. I do a minute plank of my forearms every morning and the hundred Pilates exercise modified every morning. I do bioidentical hormones for 20 years…creams…progesterone…estradiol and progesterone cream. That’s my protocol. I only had a jones fracture on my foot six years ago when I fell off a curb while wearing backless heels (stupidity) scoliosis mild
You have given me hope. Thank you so much. 💙
It looks like hormones made a difference. For those of us who cannot take hormones (I had breast cancer fed by hormones) I believe bone loss is inevitable no matter what supplements we take or what exercise we do. Hormones may be useful before age 60. @nme1985 are you or will you continue past 60?
I totally understand. My sister-in-law had breast cancer too. I am going to be 68 in October and I am going to continue on my bio, identical hormones. I do agree that they have helped me. I have no cancer history in my family. Endocrinologist have asked me to go on drugs for the past 10 years pushing pushing pushing me. My dad was a doctor so I always question whether medicines are the best way to go. I’m probably a terrible patient. So I went on Actonel two summers ago and stayed on it for three months, 0MG I was dizzy every day. I actually fainted going to the bathroom at night and it’s wonder I didn’t break my hip or anything else. Thank God I landed on my elbows and knees. Somehow I stopped at medicine immediately I think that’s the only reason they will consider this medicine for me because I can’t take the other form , I wish you luck with your bones. I know this is a heartbreaking journey with your encouragement. I am going to try to try the tymolos. I have a new endocrinologist now and on our last visit she did recommend for Tayo or Talos, but was giving me six months to make up my mind so I go to her next week. At least I have some knowledge about the Penn and starting on a lower dose I can’t thank you enough.
Sorry I was voicetexting!
Hello,
Welcome to the group. I have found it extremely helpful and am now doing great on Tymlos. I tried Forteo but because one can only inject a full dose from the get go the bad side effects were more than I could stand. With Tymlos I started at 1 click of the pen, so 1/8 of a dose and worked my way up within a few weeks to 7 clicks. I've not been able to up it to 8 clicks yet but when I have a week free enough to allow for down time I'll try again. The good news is that at 7 clicks for almost 6 months my bone density is greatly improved and my spine is no longer in osteoporosis and is now back to osteopenia levels. My doctor is very happy with these results as am I. I need to have a revision spinal surgery and now that my spine is stronger I can go forward with that plan.
Tymlos is my choice. I could not tolerate the side effects of Forteo, which has to be injected at full dose from the get go. Tymlos is shelf stable, and it is possible to step up the dose slowly to get used to the medication more easily. I am up to 7 clicks and in the last 6 months my spinal bone density has improved greatly from osteoporosis to osteopenia levels. I highly recommend Tymlos. And if you are on medicare and have a limited income they will provide it free of charge.
@mspatart yay!!!!
