Pain after lobectomy (lung cancer) surgery: When will it go away?

Posted by allstaff @allstaff, Feb 21 8:00am

Two months out from lower left lobectomy and just started to feel better when pain started again all around the incision area and upper part of back and spine area. Almost like a stinging sensation. I have read this could happen. Has anyone experienced this?

Great feedback from April … Gabapentin may help. I didn’t like the drug but most people tolerate it well.

Do you take that drug. If so how long do you take it for?

Well, I hope you get some support on Monday- I have the numbness too. Our poor bodies have been through so much.
I haven't heard of BioFreeze is it similar to a lidocaine patch?

I really don’t know, but the Biofreeze takes away the burning for about two hours. I use it 3 or four times a day. It’s a roll-on.

Gabapentin? I only took it a few days - it gave me scary psych dreams. Apparently that’s an unusual side effect but I stopped
It. It did help with burning pain but not rib pain.

If you are referring to the back patch SalonPas it lasts several hours - it helped me get to sleep

I’m going to try the salon pad. I’m really afraid to take that gabapentin. Thank you so much

Scary dreams? Interesting. I seem okay with it. It seems to minimize my rib pain. But who knows, sometimes I wonder about the placebo effect. Is that why I have less pain?
I started an ALk inhibitor (alectinib ), I have all sorts of weird side effects. But I check in with the oncologist on Monday. I have been on it for 2 weeks.
Talking about it with others going through similar cancer journeys helps me. This is a rough ride and others don't quite get the impact on our lives. They think, "oh you had chemo, surgery, fill in the blank_______" so you must be all done, feeling good-

I know it’s sometimes hard for other people to understand, unless they go through with themselves. I hope you’re doing well. It sounds like you are I opted out of chemo. I decided to juice carrots, celery, ginger, and lemon and thank God. I’m doing good I’m following this guy his name is Chris. Wark. He developed stage three colon cancer at the age of 26. He had surgery he decided not to do chemo he decided to go on a plant based diet. His doctor had told him in six months he’ll be dead. He’s 47 now doing great.

Seven years ago I had my upper left lung removed. I’m still having pain. Will this pain ever go away thank you.

Wow, I am trying to eat healthy foods. Dr. William Li has helpful food tips. I did have chemo before my surgery, then I had radiation after my lobectomy. The medicine I am taking is targeted therapy. The type of lung cancer I have is a mutation. It is called ALK lung cancer.
Walking outdoors keeps me happy. Keep me posted.

I love Dr LI. I I listen to his videos a lot he has great recipes. Seven years ago I had stage one lung cancer they took half my upper left mung out.. it seems like you’re doing great. I think the best thing to do is try to stay away from red meat. I know it’s hard if you love red meat but it’s worth a try. Enjoy the outdoors. Nice talking to you.

Does it feel like you're wearing a bra 3 or 4 sizes too small or thicker your tens are caught in a vise grip? When I had my vats in 2011 they injured the intercostal nerve that ran along one of the ribs they manipulated. I still have that burning tightness. Sometimes it's worse than others. It has gotten a lot better over time.

Yes, that is the best way to describe it. A bra way too small but it’s promising that you said it gets better in time. I rub frankincense on my stomach and it takes the burn away. It’s been seven years for me. How many years is it for you? I cannot wait for this to get better. Thank you so much.
