Lung Cancer Support Group: Looking for support from others
I’ve noticed in events several support groups but not seeing a lung cancer support group. Am I missing it?

@bevthaldorf- If you go to you tube and type in how to use..and then the name of your hair piece there probably will be a great solution to how to affix them.

Thanks so much for the leads!
Unfortunately i dont think my local oncology facility is large enough to have connections like this, but i will call them tomorrow !
I have seen a few companies that seem to rent everything needed. Im looking into it more. 90% retention seems great!
I wont know until later this week or early next the type of chemo they will use for me— those are certainly words i never thought id type!.
Thanks again!
Amy
Ok, sorry for responding 2 years later, but I was just thinking the same thing. There are numerous groups for other cancers, breast cancer seems to be the number one. So lung cancer is the leading killer and we have 0? I really think this needs to be addressed!
Hi Cindy, you're right. At the moment, a monthly Zoom meeting for lung cancer is not currently in the calendar. The oncology social work team is looking into addressing this. Not all tumor types have a monthly meeting, but all have a forum here on Mayo Clinic Connect.
I'm glad that you take part in the Lung Cancer Support Group here, which is available every day and at every hour. Thank you for supporting fellow lung cancer patients and families.
The Go2 Foundation has a monthly meeting, the LiveLung Foundation has some weekly in person and a couple virtual meetings every month. Attendees receive a $20 GrubHub virtual gift card. The Lungevity Foundation has several weekly meetings. If there is a Gilda's Club or Cancer Support Community in your area they have weekly meetings plus a monthly lung cancer only group. If you need links let me know.
Yes, I am aware that you can find groups elsewhere and appreciate your help. I was just addressing the fact that we are missing a great opportunity here. As we all know there are other groups for all cancers elsewhere. I'm just trying to make sure lung cancer patients are supported as well. Many of us feel the stigma of our disease and being overlooked when it's the number 1 cause of cancer deaths just doesn't seem right.
Wishing you happiness,
thank you,
Cindy
Was your CT scan through Rochester? I was trying to find written results, but couldn’t find them on the app site, just that I had it.
Hi @cindyjk, I like to tell people that 'anyone with lungs can get lung cancer'. It's difficult to overcome the stigma, no thanks to anti-smoking campaigns from the 80's and 90's.
The truth is that no one deserves to get any cancer, including lung cancer. It's difficult to not pit one cancer against another, but I do try to share statistics when I'm presented with the opportunity. From the American Cancer Society:
"Lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death in the US, accounting for about 1 in 5 of all cancer deaths. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined."
Also, federal funding for lung cancer has traditionally been disproportionately low. Hopefully that is starting to change.
We need to keep telling our stories, and I will continue to refuse to wear pink in October. Keep up the good fight. Wishing you many years of good health.
I may have mentioned it before but it was announced on the news about two months ago… lung cancer is no longer referred to as a death sentence, this is attributed to early detection, most doctors are using scans and the cancer is detected sooner. It’s a very hopeful announcement especially for those of us who have been affected by this disease.
I'm confused, each of the 4 places I mentioned have lung cancer specific support groups. One of them has lung cancer meetings almost every day of the week. Do you mean Mayo Clinic specifically?
