Hairloss

Posted by donnajones @donnajones, Feb 13 6:59pm

All my life I have had thick coarse hair, about 7 months ago I had diffuse shedding and lost about half my hair. Very thin with no core now. I have checked a lot of my hormone levels and they r all
Ok. The only hormone low is my TSH and we run it there because of past hx of thyroid cancer . The level has never caused me a problem so I doubt it is that. Any ideas? Anyone else encountered this?

I really can relate! It’s a very scary and stressful thing. I’ll just say what I have experienced. My shedding was rather sudden. I had beautiful long hair, then it was very thin. Scalp showing thin depending on how I styled it…..I began consulting with my dermatologist. At the time, I was going through a lot. I had a full panel of blood work….from vitamin levels, iron, thyroid, a1c, etc. I was treated for Vitamin b12 deficiency in April. I had also lost a great deal of weight in a short time. Plus, had been diagnosed with post covid syndrome. And, suffered extreme anxiety due to a number of reasons. I’m now seeing a therapist. (Now, I’m much better.)

After all was considered, my endocrinologist (i have type 1 diabetes) and dermatologist concluded that it was telogen effluvium that caused the rapid shedding , due to my rapid weight loss. (Now totaling 65 pounds, 50 of it being lost with hair loss.) They say the post covid syndrome may also be a factor (you can find videos online of covid hair loss), as I also got smell/taste disorder around the same time, i still have those. The good news is that my hair should return. I wasn’t getting enough calories and recently met with a nutritionist and she gave me great advice that I have incorporated into my diet.

Hormones can also cause hair loss, as well as autoimmune disorders…..so many things. A lot of women experience it. I’d consult with a dermatologist without delay. I hope you can find answers. Please post your updates. I know how stressful this can be. I have a prescription for minoxidil, as that is the only real treatment for hair loss, according to my doctors. I may have to take it a year until my hair returns naturally, though I haven’t started yet. . It’s already shedding less, so I may just let it return naturally. The med is topical or pills.

I experienced hair loss at one point. My dr said it was because my thyroid medication needed readjustment. Once the dosage was corrected, the problem stopped.

Not sure what caused mine but we ordered a hair topper to help make the thinning less obvious. We shall see.

I hope you find answers.

I have looked at toppers. Please post how you like it. I may get one.

I looked at a bunch, but got scared I wouldn’t get the right size or color. They were real hair and expensive. Then there’s the issue of the scalp part. Silk seems to be very natural, but it’s more expensive. I finally decided to get a consult at a local shop, but when I called to confirm there was a mixup with my appointment….man…I kept running into obstacles. I decided to let my niece, who is a hair stylist, help me. She has been out of town, then sick….but I haven’t given up. I may need a topper to get me through my regrowth.

I found the toppers exciting. It can really jazz up your look. I have highlighted honey blonde hair with dark blonde roots,,,,so, it’ll be a challenge to keep the color right to match the topper. Many of my friends no longer color or highlight their hair…..I can’t do that right now.

I just had an idea after reading your post Celia. I don’t know if it can be done, but I wonder if a hair topper made of real hair can be colored to match your color? Just a thought. Maybe your niece could do that for you? Color and style it the way you wear it? I’m excited for you. I hunted for the right color. So opted for a mix. I saw some can be returned. My confidence has taken a few shots so this could really lift the spirits. Since it’s not dense, I’m hoping it will blend. Mine is so thin, I hope it helps. I even saw clip in bangs. They have everything lol. I’ve seen some that are darker at the crown and lighter locks. You will find just the right one. 🙂

That’s a great idea! Thanks. I’ll discuss it with her. She’s new at styling, but she did a great job when she colored me right before the shedding. I’ll try to find photo. I cried over this many times. I know how emotional it can be. People have no idea. This thing impacts a lot of women. Many of the woman are cancer survivors. I have a new sensitivity to what they are going through. There are you tube videos that describe the resilience of woman who suffer hair loss. It’s very inspiring.

I’ll look forward to seeing updates here. Take care. 😊

I just happen to have an appt with my dermatologist next week and will definitely bring to her attention. I had Covid 6/23 but my hair loss was before that. Needless to say it is not weight loss as I diet everyday. 😊. Thank you so much for sharing maybe I can get on the monoxidil.

The minoxidil in pill form is a very small dose for women, but you must take it every day. It only works as long as you take it. It doesn’t work for everyone and I have read that when you first start taking it, initially you’ll have greater shedding, but that will phase out. That’s one reason I’ve put off taking it. And, hoping my shedding will stop and my regrowth will set in. Idk. I’ll have to decide soon.

Oh, my ex SIL, the mother of my niece hair stylist, had the same kind of hair loss years ago, due to stress. It grew back ok, though. I’m not sure if she took meds.

You can also use topical minoxidil, but I think that would be a major inconvenience, though it’s doable. I got the foam and pills. I have both just in case.

I was warned it can cause random hair to grow on your face or body, but that doesn’t bother me. I can deal with getting rid of that.

Good luck with the dermatologist.
