How do you feel about falling?

Posted by Steph-Words That Fly @stephcarney, Jan 7 9:05pm

In the last two winters I've had two falls. The first was a series of three falls on an icy trail within 15 minutes resulting in a badly sprained wrist that took a looong time to recover from. Now I'm terrified of the ice or even slippery new snow, so I have four different sets of micro spikes.

Early last spring I fell down the steps (indoors) carrying my ailing dog to let her out in the middle of the night. She was fine. I was badly bruised in multiple places. Now, no socks on steps, carry only one thing and hold the rail. I manage steps very carefully.

I am paranoid about falling. Maybe I should practice falling correctly! What are your thoughts about falling? What do you do to prevent falls?

Wow you sound like a good councilor. I did reach out to the other Dr. His nurse called me back and said she was sure he would take time to get me in for a visit. This was at least 2 weeks ago. Never heard a word. So what will I do tomorrow. I ve told the Dr I'd have the surgery. It's set for April 18th unless he has a cancelation. Have not been able to tell my daughter. She said she don't want to talk to no one or see any one. This is the family I've lived my life to since I was 18. I told my son. He said nothing. I haven't ask them for anything. Other surgeries I signed myself in a rehab home til I was better to come home.

@ammaw52 Good for you! There's some movement. How does making that call about the surgery make you feel? You can always change your mind...or not! Call your other doctor again! What do you have to lose? Even if you've made a decision, perhaps talking to him will give you a measure of confidence- your attitude going into surgery will make a difference. In today's world, things fall through the cracks. The squeaky wheel gets the grease! Be the squeaky wheel but be a kind squeaky wheel. As far as your kids go, perhaps they still know you, expect you, to be an independent person who takes care of herself, always have, always will. We tend to take the actions of others very personally when sometimes people respond in certain ways because of their own "stuff." Maybe write or email your daughter and son. It's Valentine's Day tomorrow. Tell them you love them and always will. Tell them you miss them. You've already exceeded today's plan, YAY! What's your plan for tomorrow?

Walking poles are a game changer for me. I am 78 and have a dizziness issue.

Walking poles are also a game changer for me. I had back surgery and my balance isn’t good. I feel more confident and I usually have no pain while walking with the poles.

Take falls seriously. Very easy to get a real injury. And it may not even be noticed easily.

About 12 years ago my wife slipped on the ice in front of our house. Just from that...broke 2 ribs.

please be gentle and nurturing with your injuries. At lot of times we are just too tough and just try to push through, rather than really take care of injuries...

i've fallen indoors and outside so many times i don't remember how many there were. i've been slammed into the wall. picked up and thrown on the hard ground. and now i have a herniated disc L5. i use a cane for getting around.mainly outside on the unlevel ground. plus for balance because of dizziness from this and bad balance issues. but i guess i should look into these walking poles.

I think about a first floor bedroom as well. I think we could convert our living room. Problem is we only have a half bath downstairs.
I have read that there is an uside to having stairs. It forces you to keep some strength in your legs. I keep telling myself that.🙂
As for creating a first floor bedroom and bath--we recently remodeled our kitchen. Not sure I want to go thru that again. It's not easy living in a construction zone. Maybe someday.

We had a stair lift installed last year. Prices range from $ 4,000 - 7,000. It was worth it to us...cheaper than a remodel and I feel safer.

I’ve not fallen but I too am scared of falling. I live in Manitoba and have snow/ice for months.

I use a spiked walking stick whenever I’m outside, even to go to the car and Nordic walking poles for walks.

Without the poles, I shuffle like like an old person. I am 78 and active.

@howdi Sounds like you're doing your utmost to mitigate the possibility of falling without compromising your activity level. Way to go @howdidthishappentome !
