Are you taking Reclast for osteoporosis?

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Jul 21, 2020

Two years ago I was diagnosed with pretty bad osteoporosis because of the prednisone I was on for my autoimmune disease. I started taking Fosamax (a bisphosphonate) and had no problems. Today, the endocrinologist suggested that I switch to Reclast for 3 yearly infusions. Has anyone else taken this drug? What side effects have you had?
Thanks

@lizzabeth in my experience many providers (including dentists) hear "osteoporosis meds" and think only of bisphosphonates (like Reclast) and Prolia, which do, over time, have the potential to make more brittle bones and cause dental issues or atypical femur fractures. These meds are anti-resorptives and, as another poster wrote, address bone turnover.

These issues are apparently more common among cancer patients on high doses and also for people on them for a long time.

Osteoporosis meds that are "anabolic" and actually grow bone, meaning Forteo and Tymlos, do not create brittle bone.

Evenity is a bone builder for the first months and becomes more antiresorptive in the latter months, so has the same risk for brittle bone but much lower risk than bisphosphonates and Prolia.

Was the Fosamax helping rebuild bone?

The bone health doctor explained to me that Fosamax seals the bone to prevent further loss but does not build new bone. I had to quit the Fosamax because of severe stomach pain. She then recommended Reclast infusion and I’ve had side effects 5 months now. I will not do that again. I hope that helps with your question.

@jeanniejacobs it is possible to have a low dose Reclast, but more frequently. For instance, 1mg vs 5mg, with IV hydration, slow infusion and tylenol. Then another dose of the patient's choosing, three months later. I have also read and doc confirms, that a 2.5 mg half dose is as effective as the full 5mg.

People complain of terrible weight again w/ Forteo, did you experience that?

I didn't gain weight on forteo. But I can say that my bones are more important to me than weight gain.
