Undecided choice of drugs for Osteoporosis

I am 80 years old women and have borderline osteoporosis which affects my entire body. My doctor wants me to take Prolia and the Rheumatologist wants me to take Reclast. I’m unhappy with both choices as the side effects are great and I do not tolerate new drugs well. I am very undecided and am considering doing not taking annty drugs for this condition. I have never had a fracture and I’m very active Any opinions or advice.

Are you able to give the precise methods and quantities of collagen and exercise that you use to combat the loss of bone? I am having to take electrosol because of breast cancer. The side effect is bone loss. I already have osteoporosis so I am in need of something to build up my bones. I don’t want to take Fosamax and initially I was supposed to do prolea but I rejected that! I am 65 and had my first annual post cancer check up in December. I am cancer free!

Are you able to give the precise methods and quantities of collagen and exercise that you use to combat the loss of bone? I am having to take electrosol because of breast cancer. @marymcg864 I took letrozole for breast cancer for 5 years. Most people do Reclast or Zometa with it, but my docs were concerned about another health issue. I already has pretty bad osteoporosis when I started and it certainly got worse, and I fractured. Tymlos after letrozole restored my bone density but the fracture effects never go away. I hope you can take a bone med with the letrozole!

Hi Mary - I can't guarantee what will help you, my doctor insists I need medication, but until I see more actual bone loss I'm sticking with collagen and weight bearing exercises. I uses Native Path collagen, a scoop every day in my coffee. But I've read that as long as it contains Type 3 collagen it should be good for bone loss. I also listen to YouTube videos on bone loss from various doctors. The bone loss coach gives information that is valuable even if you don't join his program. Just Google "bone loss coach". Good luck on your journey..

That’s for great information. Forteo sounds good but I have no insurance that covers Forteo and it’s thousands per month. I need a drug which is covered under Part B of Medicare and that’s Prolia and Reclast. I don’t care for either. I currently looking for a drug that’s natural. I only have one prescription for High Blood Pressure so I’m unaccustomed to an ongoing drugs.

There is a generic for Forteo now. Maybe you could try that. My compounded hormones are comparatively inexpensive, but cost varies among pharmacies.

The price for Forteo is absurd. I'm about to start on it and there is an $8000 catastrophic out of pocket cap (Medicare) after which you pay $0 which averages to about $680 a month. Next year, the cap will be lower, but I'm not certain of the amount. I'm going to try to swing Forteo because it seems like the best choice for me out of a lot of scary and undesirable choices, and I sure as hell don't want to fracture. The cost is ridiculous.

@babs10 have you considered Tymlos? Radius, like Lilly, has a patient assistance program. As I wrote in another thread, Tymlos does not need refrigeration.

Hi, and thank you for the suggestion. Yes, it was considered, but my insurance doesn’t cover it, unfortunately.

All meds can have a negitive side affect because we are all different. You mention your doctor and your RA doctor. What is "your doctor" specialty or is this doc a GP? Since both RA and Endocrinologist treat osteoporosis, I would trust one of these doctor specialist choice. Of course, if there is a side affect that really bothers you, then you can try another osteoporosis medication.

But, wouldn't you have to wait- like with Reclast- a year? I struggle with this issue as that seems like a long time to deal with side effects.

Ask your doc on wait times. I am assuming you read or was told there is some sort of wait between medications. I am not aware of wait times. I get Prolia shots ever 6 months for the past 4 years. Last scan showed improvement. I don't have and side affects that I am aware of.
