Are you taking Reclast for osteoporosis?

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Jul 21, 2020

Two years ago I was diagnosed with pretty bad osteoporosis because of the prednisone I was on for my autoimmune disease. I started taking Fosamax (a bisphosphonate) and had no problems. Today, the endocrinologist suggested that I switch to Reclast for 3 yearly infusions. Has anyone else taken this drug? What side effects have you had?
Thanks

My endocrinologist wants me to start Reclast in January after 20 years of Fosomax. My dentist said absolutely not and to talk with an oral surgeon due to cases of osteonecrosis.

I saw my dentist a week after my Reclast infusion. Having oral surgery is not recommended when on Reclast but having your teeth cleaned is no problem.

It was so interesting to read all the comments about Relcast. I'm in turmoil as to whether or not to start treatment after reading so many negative comments about side effects on other sites, but I feel better after reading more positive experiences here. I have been taking Prolia shots for 2 years, but my rheumatology group has begun switching their patients from Prolia to Reclast or Evenity because Prolia has to be taken twice a year forever whereas Reclast (recommended in my case) is only one injection a year for 3 years. I know it should be a "no brainer" for me to switch, but I never had any side effects from Prolia & my dexascan has shown an improvement even though I've only had 4 injections. Reclast is an "unknown" for me. Also, I'm a very petite (4'10") 81 year old and I was wondering whether the infusion dose is the same for everyone or adjusted to size of the person and whether that is something to take into consideration when thinking about the side effects?

@mackie42 It is possible to have a lower "test dose" if you ask about it. A lot of people do fine with Reclast. My kidney function isn't great so I am having 1 mg for my first dose, when I have it. Hydrate well and ask for a slow infusion. Tylenol before, during and after.

Thank you! I will do that.

I am hypothyroid and my endocrinologist told me years ago that I would eventually get osteoporosis. I was diagnosed with osteopenia a few years ago and started the Reclast. It has helped a lot as I get a bone density scan every 2 years. I have had no side effects from the Reclast infusions. I have had 4 infusions. The nurse who did my infusion the other day informed me that I will not be a candidate for Reclast because of having 4 already. News to me. My doctor never told me this. But, I will see my doctor before my next infusion as well as having a bone scan before another infusion is scheduled. So, to answer your question,, another drug has not been scheduled yet. Hopefully, I will not need one. Please do not hesitate about getting Reclast. My endocrinologist is the best one in NYC (not bragging but he is the top expert) and he would not prescribe it if he did not think it would work. This year was the first time I had a side effect…a headache…that was it! I am your age as well. I blame every problem I have on my thyroid! Good luck and I hope I answered your question.

susanjane,
Thank you for your post. I have my 9th Evenity injections Friday and will be going on Reclast after that. I have been very anxious about Reclast, but you have given me some reassurance.

I have the same concern as you. I will be having Reclast but I am also very small. I asked my endo about the dosage concerning different size people and she said it doesn't matter. That doesn't make sense to me.

Has anyone switched from Prolia to Reclast? Are other physician group's switching patients from Prolia to Reclast because you don't have to take it indefinitely?

@dna41 a doc told me yesterday that they do 1mg Reclast all the time. Full dose is 5mg. You have to do the smaller dose more often though.
