Watery stool after Whipple surgery

Posted by sma5802 @sma5802, Jan 29 6:56pm

I had Whipple surgery done two weeks ago, I have suffered watery stool ever since. Tried Imodium 4 times a day, started CREON with each meal. Tried spread out the CREON intake multiple times within one meal. Seems nothing is doing the trick. Anyone here has the similar experience? Would this eventually get better?

Thank you so much in advance!

Have the doctors check for infection. My brother had that happen after he had a Denver shunt surgery that was not caught until it was too late. May be totally unrelated but worth a check. Best of luck.

I have the same problem. I am taking two 38,000 units of Creon per meal and one per snack.

If you optimize Creon (see https://digestthis.ca) and no improvement in watery bowel movements, two causes come to mind-
Creon is ineffective and evaluating another brand may give better results.

Another cause could be the beneficial bacteria in your GI tract were depleted through the treatment of antibiotic and an opportunistic bacteria has predominated. Clostridium difficile (C. diff) is a common hospital acquired (nosocomial) infection that will require testing for it and then treatment with a very specific antibiotic.

Another condition-SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth) is another possibility that a GI specialist can do a diagnostic work-up for.

I never responded to Imodium. The anti-diarrheal medications that worked for me were Rx atropine, Lomotil, Lomax, and Loperimide.

The BRAT diet of Banana, Rice, Apple Sauce and Toast can be helpful in solidifying the stool.

If you are on Facebook, there are a couple of Whipple groups that have lots of helpful advice from experience. Whipple Surgery Survival group is the one I find most helpful.
