Prolia & Jaw Pain

Posted by ldl @ldl, Jan 27, 2024

I had my first Prolia injection on Jan. 16. I didn't have any side effects, but today I awoke with a sore jaw. My doctor said it would be very rare to have that type of reaction from just one injection. Has anyone else had this experience from their first Prolia injection? Thank you for any input.

Good afternoon @ldl, and a big welcome to Connect. I was actually on my way to get dinner started and saw your post about your first Prolia injection. I had a couple of similar experiences. #1.....my first ever biphosphonate Boniva and #2.......Prolia after two years with Tymlos and no side effects. I talked with my physician and she recommended that I begin a chart to see if there was a pattern that related to "anything". Six weeks later, I gave up and scheduled a consultant appointment with my endocrinologist at Mayo Rochester.

As I read these posts I begin to understand that we are all quite different. That is why I choose to give things some time, especially medication referred by a qualified physician. This group of Bone Health patients comes to Connect with both a lot to share and a lot to learn.

Would you please let me know what you have decided?

May you struggles and sorrows be eased.

Thank you for replying, Chris. My endocrinologist suggested I see my dentist in a week or two if symptoms continue. I was off & on oral bisphosphates for 8 years & never had this symptom.

I have been on Prolia for 3 years. Since last July I started to have jaw pain on lower jaw, both sides. After my last Prolia shot, the pain got worse. Have seen my dentist 3 times, an oral surgeon, and periodontist. All visual exams and xrays show nothing. My one dr said if it was on both sides, that wouldn’t be from the Prolia. To deal with the pain I take 1 Tylenol during the day and one Motrin before bed.
Does anyone have suggestions of what to do that might help? Thanks!

@laciewally Could you please tell me if the jaw pain eventually went away and what it turned out to be?

I’ve also had a toothache for two weeks now. My CT scan was clear and there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with the tooth, so I’m worried.

@mariaway Im so sorry for your pain. I began side effects after first injection throughout my body. After the second—I cd not tolerate more pain nor numerous other side effects. My jaw still hurts as well as othe side effects remaining. Read the side effects the manufacturer Amgen lists. I have had them. I would try not taking drug as some people are mire sensitive to it than others. I was NOT believed except my dentist believed me. It is your body and pain may be telling you. Best health to you. Jimiwho?

@jimiwho Thank you for sharing your experience. How long has your jaw been hurting? And did you have any imaging done by your dentist?

@mariaway I’m experiencing similar pain 4 months after my first injection. It’s intermittent and acetaminophen and naproxen help. Before the pain started I had a routine dental exam & cleaning with full xrays which are clear. I’m unsure about continuing with Prolia.

@dahlia Does the pain get worse when you eat? Did you only have one Prolia injection?

@mariaway Only one Prolia injection. No pain with eating, swelling or outward signs of infection. The discomfort is not localized around a particular tooth
