← Return to Stopping Carvedilol (Coreg): When will the effects wear off?

I think that it is a bit strange that they would prescribe Coreg for hypertension in the first place. Coreg is a special type of beta blocker with extra properties that make it particularly useful in heart failure and which make the heart pump a little stronger. For someone who was not in heart failure, it seems to me that would be the wrong drug to use though I am not a doctor. Toprol (metoprolol succinate) is one that would seem to be more suitable for that purpose. There are also other classes of drugs that are used to manage hypertension that might be appropriate as well. I might seek a second opinion and see whether that approach was the correct one from the get-go.

You're welcome, @clariseb. I look forward to hearing from you again when you're ready. Coreg is the brand name for Carvedilol. I assume you drew a distinction between them based on whether it comes in a pill or a capsule. One point I forgot to mention: You should try to take the medication at the same time(s) every day (so your body doesn't react poorly to what may seem to be abrupt withdrawal). Also, I found that it is better to take it with food, so I do mine at breakfast and at dinner. Finally, the "label" that FDA requires to be given with a prescription runs to four typewritten pages. My pharmacy included that so I have all of the important instructions and side-effects from this medication. Those four pages are filled with good information and issues to discuss with your doctor or your pharmacist. Martin

Glad you say that. I have mild LAE with 2 mm dilationand on nifedipine and now carvidilol..3.6 M.G. twice daily. Echo showed no heart failure and an EF of 66% .,EF has gone up from 60% but not sure if this was improved from weight loss and lower BP,or the carvidilol. Sleep poorly now . Feel anxious and jittery at times and depression And I noticed my pulse rate has finally calm down so I’m going to see if I can reduce and finally stop taking the pill altogether if my heart muscle has been able to be repaired to the extent that it does not need to kick in.

Also a cardiologist online tells me with Managing BP in the 125/85 range I can expect 80% chance full reversal of the LAE in six months. Anyone hear of this happening. .?

I had borderline LAE which was on the last year EKG but Dr only Suggested I see a cardiologist but did not tell me why and unfortunately I ignored his advice and things went just fine for another nine months- after a night of partying a vicious dog attack sent me to hospital where I got SVT and went hypertensive for a few hours ..A few nights later I ate four slices of pizza and also got another bout of SVT. This never happened before so guess my borderline LAE was not symptomatic or the attack stretched the atrium just enough to trigger symptoms and an echo cardio gram confirmed a mild left atrial enlargement. I’ve managed to drop 15 pounds my blood pressure is now back in an acceptable range I’ve been on nifedipine for 10 years but was only seriously taking up the last two years so I don’t know if there’s irreversible damage to the atrium or if it can be returned to its original size.

Any one with a comment? I did read the other peoples articles about Corel..not a pleasant drug.

I thought the came coreg is very strong. I was given it close to a yr ago he told me i had diastolic heart failure which i never had been told by hospital that he said he for that news from thru my records. Anyways i hate it causes my eyes to blur, muscle cramps, extreme fatigue and sugar issues. He just throwing more pills at me telling me im a full diabetic now. I've never had diabetes ever no sugar probs, its that dang coreg. I threw all that junk out and been weaning off coreg ever since. Im down from 12.5 2× a day to a qtr of one lil over 3 mgs once at bedtime. Im done with drs and pills creating more probs then putting me on more pills id rather live without then and take my chances. Sorry about that long reply. Yes toprolxl or metoprolol would have made more sense. Never had side effects with those
