Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Thank you for asking, @lioness. I'm in something of a stupor at present. Mostly going through the rote motions and dreading the ringing phone. Yesterday took me far too long to make an online grocery order...just kept taking breaks and going back but did complete it and was surprised that I could choose today for delivery. Either the market has increased its number of drivers or fewer are requesting home delivery. It also took far longer than usual to do the initial unpacking. Stashed items in freezer and stored fresh items in frig without the additional cleaning first. Will get back to some of that later.

Yesterday I drove the car for the 3rd time, 1st to buy a Target coffeemaker; 2nd to friend's house and also again there yesterday at daybreak with the TX phys. form and food for snacks and a meal. He makes an early trip each morning to spend an hour to shower and care for their Yorkie then another hour early evening for short walk with Tuffy. I drove to the Abroretum and took a walk through the wild flower park. The poppies and corn flowers had bloomed out but there were other spots of color and the holly hocks have buds. It was a walking meditation for me and a lovely start to the day.

@lioness, Yes, I'm thinking fewer are placing home delivery orders. Sometimes I think I'm living in a Zombie Zone or an alternate universe. Everyone I talk with sounds like life here is much the same as before the pandemic and I ask myself, who is living in the real world...me or them??? Then I pinch myself with the reminder that despite what others are doing, I still have health issues and senior status which equates to more virus vulnerability.

Thank you for asking. My friend is receiving more sedation which is a blessing. We are thinking in terms of days or possibly a week, surely not two. She is so very weak but continues to muster a smile for her guy. The daughter delayed her trip another day and we can't help but feel relief because we cannot predict her behavior. The prayer is for a reconciliation with her mom and kindness and consideration for peace and harmony above all with whom she has contact.

The plan seems to change daily for her release date...tomorrow? who knows. The blessing is that Fred's two daughters will arrive tomorrow and their presence will make such a wonderful difference for him.

@fiesty76 Get outside to walk, take a deep breath or three, see the colorful flowers and very much a rainbow of Nature's finest presentation. These will be salve to your heart and soul.

Blessings on you and all involved.

@gingerw, Thank you for your response. I do have to remember to keep breathing. smiles Nature is such a healer and restorer of spirits.

@becsbuddy, Hi, Becky, My daughter told me yesterday that when she and her friend went on a Boulder area 3 hour hike, they saw snow! Wow! It is June.
In TX, we are having days in the 90's so early outside is the call of the day for me.

They are new to Boulder and wanting to take a family break. Any suggestions within maybe 600 miles like a vacation home/condo/cabin with nearby opportunity for canoing, water skiing, gold panning, river or boat fishing? They don't have tents but could acquire...just don't want enclosed areas or hotels ...thought of mining towns but then lines to go down into mines?

@fiesty76 I haven't been there for a number of years, but we loved the Beaver Creek area in summer. As I recall, off-season condo rental, with outdoor entrances to each unit in many resorts, was reasonable because it was off-season. LOTS of hiking opportunities, lift rides to the tops of slopes, horseback riding, whitewater rafting & kayaking

@sueinmn, Sue, thank you so much! I'll send this to daughter right away. We used to go to Pagosa Springs, CO to camp and do the walking along the river, trout fishing. It has been decades since there last and never explored other options. The family would love the options you mentioned because they are very outdoorsy and sporty. I'd mentioned dude ranches for the horses but those usually have one big bunk house style building and family spa spots usually provide meals as part of the pkg. Hugs!

Good morning @fiesty76 ! So your daughter is in Boulder! Yes, there is still snow in the mountains! We had a crazy storm several days ago that left snow in Estes Park and along I-70. Nothing new. 🤪
If your daughter is looking for a family break area, they might try Crested Butte. About a 4-5 hour drive. There is camping—just check before they go. Also hiking, fishing, rafting. It is beautiful!! Very laid back, funky town!
