Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I'm working from home so I was able to get out for a walk with the hubs today. It felt so good!

Good evening friends. MIA ( missing in action on this board). My husband and I continue to ride our air dyne bike 150 minutes most weeks. We ride two days, rest a day then ride two. We found we have to do two 15 minutes a day, can't do it all at once. If we are really tired or hurt we skip a day one in a while. I was diagnosed with hip bursitus as well, does bother me some days. I like being able to ride the bike during this time of having to stay in.
Have a great rest of the week!

Hi, again. Today we decided to take our governor’s advice re: the corona virus. He said to use your time off work to go to your state and National parks. We drove up to Estes Park and to Rocky Mountain National Park. Not very many people and the scenery was beautiful! And I got my walk in! Try some of your community, state, and national parks. They’re wonderful!

Great idea @becsbuddy . It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good, as they say. This can inspire some to enjoy the natural beauty that is often nearby. I am going to look at what is near us.
Also, with restaurants closing, for those that have warm weather a picnic might be nice.

I didn't know that recumbent bike is not good for hip bursitis. I was going to get one. My bursitis really bothered me. My ortho doctor gave me a shot of something but it didn't help. Now I have to think of something else.

@mayofeb2020 it may not bother everyone, and I plan to try doing it in two shorter sessions rather than one long. That may help, I’ll try to remember to let you know.

@patriciao I was thinking it might be something like that. When my husband and I walked we walked a bit slower than I usually do, but I took a very long, brisk walk with my son when we visited him in February and it didn’t record all the minutes either.

@pollyanne thanks for the suggestion, I may give that a try.

@macto. Two 15 or 20 minute sessions sounds good, I will try that.

@becsbuddy. That is such a beautiful park, we hope to go there again, maybe in the fall if things are resolved by then.

@becsbuddy This is beautiful. Since I don't drive anymore I appreciate seeing nature at its best . My computer in my brain has lots of memories like this but I enjoy seeing them again. Thanks

@becksbuddy- This is gorgeous. I have been to Estes Park and the town several times. I love wildlife and if you drive into the mtns there are old mining towns!

I had to make a decision today. Go for a walk, or sweep the long driveway and pull a few weeds plus pick up some pine cones to dry out for fire starters. I chose the second option. By the time I was done, over two hours had passed and my knee was absolutely screaming! But driveway is clean, a few weeds were pulled and some pine cones have been collected. Tomorrow I will try for a walk and pulling some weeds, see how far I get! Felt good to be out in the sun.
