Recent COVID-19 masking guidelines announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, continue to generate a public conversation.
"The decision about masking needs to be nuanced," says Dr. Gregory Poland, an infectious diseases expert and head of Mayo Clinic's Vaccine Research Group. "Wearing a mask should be based on the risk of infection, the percentage of the population vaccinated, a person's own immune system, and then the role of vaccine variants with the durability of our immune response."
In this Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Dr. Poland discusses masking guidelines in further detail. Also, he offers an update on COVID-19 vaccine research for children, and he shares positive news about the decreasing numbers of COVID-19 cases and deaths.
To practice safe social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, this interview was conducted using video conferencing. The sound and video quality are representative of the technology used. For the safety of its patients, staff and visitors, Mayo Clinic has strict masking policies in place. Anyone shown without a mask was recorded prior to COVID-19 or recorded in an area not designated for patient care, where social distancing and other safety protocols were followed.

I just spent a weekend in Atlanta area attending concerts and events with no social distancing and very few individuals wearing masks. I am fully vaccinated 73 yo. Being vaccinated, I did not wear my mask 100% of the time. Interesting side effect on Monday am. I have a cold sore on my lip, and feel like am I fighting a cold. I really regret not wearing my mask 100% of the time. My adult family were all vaccinated but kids, ages 10-15 are still not vaccinated. I wonder if I should go and get a Covid19 test in the next five days or so.
@jal333- The mask mandate does not mean do not wear a mask. Mayo Clinic advises restraint in socializing even after being vaccinated because others might still be infected and contagious. When in doubt, get tested!
There have been some cases of concurrent infections with COVID-19. COVID-19 can affect many organs including conjunctivitis in the eyes!
You hopefully just picked up a cold?
