What is Brain Health?

Our brain is one of the most complex parts of the human body and is a key part of creating our identity and how we interact with the world around us. That means it is important that we do our best to take care of it and the way we talk about taking care of our brain is brain health. Brain health refers to our cognitive, motor function, sensory, emotional, behavioral, and motor well-being, which affects how we act, think, feel, and relate to others.

Aspects of brain health:

  • Cognitive health: How well we think, learn and remember
  • Motor function: how well we make and control movements
  • Emotional function: how we interpret and respond to emotions
  • Tactile function: how well we feel and respond to pressure, pain, and temperature
  • Sensory Function: how well our senses work

By taking care of our brains, we can lower our risk of dementia. While changes in the brain are normal with age, there are things we can do to keep our brains alert and active, including:

  1. Exercise regularly
  2. Get plenty of sleep
  3. Eat a Mediterranean diet
  4. Engage your brain
  5. Stay socially active
  6. Keep your blood vessels healthy

This article from the Mayo Clinic Health System has a full description of how to incorporate these tips into everyday life.

I really appreciate the article. It is specific, precise, and without unnecessary information.

I would just like to add, if I may, the role of gut health in brain function. The article highlights the benefits of the Mediterranean diet, but the concept of the gut-brain axis goes beyond just one specific diet.

The microbes in our gut influence our mood, cognitive function, and even risk for certain neurobiological disorders. Eating fermented foods and a diverse range of plant fibers is great for supporting gut health, which can benefit brain health a lot.
