June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, with more than 55 million people living with Alzheimer’s disease worldwide.
The buildup of the proteins amyloid and tau in the brain causes Alzheimer's disease. These proteins form amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles which cause brain cells to die and the brain to shrink. Memory loss is the primary symptom of Alzheimer’s, but as the disease progresses, changes in judgement and personality can occur.
It is also important to remember there are still things that people living with dementia can do to live with purpose. Groups like memory cafes, Dementia Choirs, and others provide services that prioritize and support the abilities of those living with Alzheimer’s disease.
For more information on Alzheimer’s disease, the Alzheimer’s Society UK has an informational video that provides an in-depth description.
