Just Jimmy... Insights from a retiring PRC Physical Therapist.

Jimmy Trouard has been a staple in the PRC program, bringing patience, humor, and a genuine joy for helping others. He has worked at Mayo Clinic for more than 33 years and served as a Physical Therapist for the last 20 years. Jimmy transitioned from acute hospital care to the Pain Rehabilitation Center in 2017, where his impact has been felt ever since.

With his retirement now just a few steps away, we would like to take a moment to thank him for his many contributions—and to gather a few nuggets of wisdom from his lengthy career.

What led you to pursue a change from acute care physical therapy to PRC?

After working in the hospital for 27 years, I was ready for something different.  I was talking with one of the PRC therapists one day and they explained how PRC worked. They described the dramatic improvements many patients made. How many patients' lives were changed, some from being wheelchair bound to ambulatory. This piqued my interest so when the opportunity presented itself, I made the move.

Did you encounter any challenges with shifting your mindset from an acute symptom to a chronic symptom treatment approach?

Yes, there were many times I had to remind myself not to react with an acute mindset.  Fortunately, the educational concepts that I learned in the classes along with the advice from my co-workers helped me maintain the appropriate treatment approach: Changing my response from symptom focused to function focused.

What advice would you give to a person who is struggling with fear of movement, activity, or exercise because of their chronic symptoms?

I would challenge them to use their big, beautiful brain. To understand that just because they hurt doesn't mean there is any harm being done to their body. Overcoming that fear and progressing in a graded manner is key to changing how your nervous system reacts.

Are there any PRC lessons you’ve learned over the years that you will be carrying with you into retirement?

Absolutely!  Being a part of PRC for the last 8 years, I've learned a lot about interacting in a healthier, happier way of life.  I've also learned a lot about myself. I will continue to use these tools to make me a better person.

What is your best Dad Joke?

What do you call a cow that has been knighted?

 Sir Loin!!!!!!

Thanks for the laughs, Jimmy! Until next time...

Thank you, Jimmy and congrats!

This is helpful to read from a patient perspective. Thank you, Tanya Crowder.

The statement responding to the shift of Jimmy’s mindset from acute to chronic symptom treatment when he moved to Mayo’s Pain Rehab Center is super impactful! “Changing my response from symptom focused to function focused.” What a tremendous statement describing an impact that brings real progress for everyone involved.
