What is an Ostomy Nurse?

An ostomy nurse, often called WOC or enterostomal nurse, are nurses who are experts in the treatment of complex wounds, ostomy issues and incontinence.  The role of the ostomy nurse is very important in your journey with an ostomy.

The ostomy nurse is a specialized role that is aimed at providing support before and after your surgery.  They serve as the liaison between your surgical team and other members that may be involved in your care.  Your ostomy nurse will most likely be your key contact throughout your treatment.

Adjusting to life with an ostomy can be overwhelming.  Evidence has shown that patients who have WOC nurses after ostomy surgery have significantly better outcomes.  Ostomy nurses provide support and information on pouching and other ostomy products, lifestyle changes and dietary information.  You do not have to figure all of this out alone.
