The Transplant Metabolic Surgery and Weight Loss program was developed to address the epidemic of obesity within the transplant population.  Along with multiple other criteria, a patient’s BMI is important in the evaluation process for potential transplantation.  If too high, the BMI can actually be prohibitive to transplant.  In order to address this growing concern and very real issue in a patient’s access to transplant, this unique program was developed.

The Mayo Clinic Transplant Metabolic Surgery and Weight Loss Program focuses on providing the patient with the tools necessary for medical weight loss and also the surgical option of bariatric surgery.

The staff includes a transplant/bariatric dietitian, bariatric and transplant nurse coordinator, financial counselor, bariatric and transplant support groups, physical therapist, transplant nephrologist, transplant hepatologist, and a transplant/bariatric surgeon.  The unique integration of both transplant and bariatric staff allows this program to care for transplant patients with obesity in ways standard bariatric programs cannot.  We not only have the expertise, but also the experience to understand the complexity of bariatric surgery and weight loss in the transplant population.  We are able to closely monitor these patients not only for clinical follow-up, but we also concurrently work them up for transplant while they are undergoing their weight loss journey.

The Mayo Clinic Transplant Metabolic Surgery and Weight Loss Program is poised to become the nation’s leader of bariatric surgery for patients with obesity and organ failure.
