Sep 20, 2017 · regarding chronic polymyositis treatment in Autoimmune Diseases

My brother was diagnosed with Dermatomyositis/Polymyositis at age 22 going to every type of doctor and finally an Allergist came up the diagnosis. After the initial diagnosis by the allergist, he spent a period of time at Mayo Clinic in Minnestoa and I am convinced that the time there enabled them to set the course for his future. He is now 61 and has had many meds/treatments etc. Unfortunately this disease is not curable but the fact that he is still with us is a testament to his doctors and his treatment. All 4 of his extremities have been affected by this disease. He also has respiratory problems, cardiac problems, e.g. AFib. (he recently had an ablation). Has GI problems due primarily to all the meds he has taken but this is fairly well under control with diet changes. He is still on many meds and has a team of doctors caring for him. My point in telling this story is that although this disease is very debilitating, one can live a fairly long life and be productive. He is a husband, a grandfather to 3 children and my cherished brother. To this of you who are going through these issues now, take heart and keep a positive attititude!! With the right physicians and treatment, hopefully you can have a decent future.

Thank you Dolan. I am going to go forth and conquer the heck out of this. Hope people don’t wait as long as I did, but it is never too late. I appreciate your support!!! I don ‘t anticipate any reactions to the Forteo and I am very used to giving injections so no problem there. I will keep you posted!!!

I also only took the oral medication for a short time. Probably should have continued. Now I have seen a Rheumatologist and she suggested Prolia or Forteo. I am due to start the Forteo after some dental work, and feel better about it since hearing from those of you who have taken it. I recently hit another snag——I had 4 episodes of rapid heartbeat. Don’t know what type. I am now wearing a Holter monitor for 2 weeks and then am scheduled for an Echocardiogram to Rule out any Mitral Valve Issues. I, like some others of you did not follow up the way I should have after I had my first fracture, bu the Rheumatologist did not tell me nothing could be done. In fact she told me that I was past the point for taking the oral meds and suggested the Forteo. My out of pocket cost will be $100 per month for the 2 years (Hopefully, the price will not continue to go up), however I am ok with the cost if the Forteo actually builds bone for me. I will post my activity with the Forteo after I can get it started. Good luck to all of you that are having similar problems. Glad we can discuss these problems on this thread.

What kind of side effects are you experiencing? I am supposed to start on Forteo very soon.

The only possible side effects I have seen are the rare jaw bone problems!!! You obviously didn’t have any of those Dolan—–I think that is great!!!

Thank you. A lot of this is my own fault for not following up the way I should have. As for my age, I am in my early 70’s and quite active, which is how I want to keep it. Thanks for your concern.

Dolan, I amy very, very encourage by your results with Forteo. I haven’t known anyone who has taken it and was leery about starting it. I feel so much better reading your results. Like you, I have had a traumatic pelvic fracture, traumatic arm fracture and a couple of rib fractures. I have a family history and currently have a cousin how has Osteopenia and is on Prolia. I think I will stick with the Forteo!!! Thanks for sharing your results.
