My Dr. Said if you have documented gastric issues your insurance company has to pay for a more expensive type of medicine for the Osteoporosis, such as Proleia. As far as he stomach goes, have you tried eating some kind of miselie or bran cereal that you can tolerate? That is, if your stomach is a gastric problem?

Jul 21, 2016 · My Osteoporosis is leading to Broken Bones in Bones, Joints & Muscles

Hi everyone. I haven’t posted very much lately because I have been healing from a shattered ankle!

I broke it in March, and had surgury and harware put in on both sides. 8 weeks later I am finally walking wihout an assisted device, and it will take another 4 months to get my foot back to almost normal. I found out last weekend that my Dr. was worried about my healing at all because of my Osteoporosis.

In the past two years I’ve put my back out twice, fractured a rib, fractured an elbow, and now my ankle. I don’t tell you this to complain, but to remind you how serious Osteoporosis really is. I am not 70, I am 50. I am not unhealthy, this is genetic. We only figured out the Osteoporosis because my Mom had it so badly, we decided to test at such a young age just in case.

So after loading up on calcium I was cleared to start Proleia in March. Didn’t get to take it until April because of my fall. It takes 3 years for the Proleia to reverse the Osteoporosis. I am praying I don’t break my hip before then.

Please Please Please take Osteoporosis seriously and find a way to fight it with everything you have. Exercise and medicine are both very important! Your ability to walk (and therfore your ability to live independently) is on the line!

I had my first Proleia shot in April and no side effects. My Dr. Said the side effects are rare. Having a problem with my jaw would be very difficult, but not being able to walk would be far worse.

Has your Dr. Talked about a different class of drugs? If the normal ones bother a patient there are other kinds of drugs people can take, like Proleia. Don’t give up unless your Dr. Recommends you do. Your ability to walk is on the line.

Hi Ggopher! Welcome to the group! There are lots of ideas and perspectives here. You can get a lot of information to research and take back to your Dr’s. I am surprised by your being on fosamax for so long when it seems like your bones are not that far along the path to being strong. Are those numbers from a recent scan? My mom was in a similar situation with both Parkinson’s and osteoporosis and unfortunately fell doing normal light house work, broke her hip, and never walked again. Definitely your weight lifting and exercise will help your balance to keep you from falling, but from what I understand as a patient, may not be enough. Parkinson’s and balance are definitely issues that go together. Maybe the info in this group will help you evaluate your situation and ask new questions that might give you more options. We each are so different! Keep us posted and good luck.
