Nov 24, 2017 · Cardiac Amyloidosis in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)

Colleen, thanks for your info. You are right. I once was very active physically. I now go to our local YMCA and use the bikes. I can pretty easily do a half hour at moderate resistance. I am a little unsteady on my feet so I have not done as much walking as I would like.

Hi Jim Hoffman here. Have gone from marathon runner to barely able to walk around the block. Sound bitter? Yes a bit. I am 81 plus and I guess I should be thankful that I am currently getting up each day. I will try to be more cheerful in the future.

On November 1 had nuclear scan of heart to determine if protein transthyretin present in my heart. Presence of this protein causes heart to become thicker and ultimately weaker. Condition called amyloidosis. Symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, abdominal and leg swelling etc. Treatment is what I am undergoing now. Diuretics, blood thinner and treatment for heart arrhythmia. I am also on Entresto which has been helpful. Any others out there with amyloidosis?

Forgot to say last resort.

Can’t really comment on ablation procedure in that my MD has told me another ablation ( I have had two.) is not a good option fof me. I have HCM. I did have a rough Sept and Oct. I had to be cardio verted after being hospitalized twice. I was put on Norpace that really had side effects that I tried to gut out but ended up losing my appetite, being constantly gaseous, apathetic and constipated. I am now on Amiodenone (sp) and am doing better but still have some side effects, plus I get the feeling the Dr.’s see this as a last. Any other HCM out there with some cheery words of advise on meds etc. Thanks.
