Dec 9, 2016 · Couple Delivers 'Blessing Bags' to Show Patients They're Not Alone

Before Thanksgiving last year, Anthony found a bump on the roof of his mouth. When his dentist didn’t know what it was, Anthony visited Mayo Clinic for a biopsy and was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Anthony completed a 12 day radiation treatment that proved to be successful. After Anthony and his wife Kari experienced such a difficult time during the holidays, they wanted to pay it forward and help other patients. They returned to Mayo Clinic to hand-deliver “blessing bags,” filled with items that Anthony found the most useful during his cancer treatment, such as lip balm and hand sanitizer. Anthony’s radiation nurse said the “blessing bags” are an inspiration themselves. “They’re a phenomenal gift. To be able to give them a gift like this … it truly is a blessing.”

Dec 7, 2016 · How Long Should You Keep Your Holiday Leftovers?

Are you gearing up for the holidays by pulling out all of your old family recipes? Some of us love holiday eating more than holiday cooking, but whatever side you’re on, almost everyone enjoys leftovers. But just how long should you be snacking on them after the holiday party has ended? Leftovers can be kept for three to four days in the refrigerator, but after that, the risk of food poisoning increases. If you don’t think you’ll be able to eat leftovers within four days, freeze them immediately. When you’re ready to eat, heat them on the stove, oven or microwave until the internal temperature reaches 165 F (74 C).

No one wants to be sick during the holidays, or kick off 2017 with the sniffles, so get started on your resolutions early.

Dec 2, 2016 · Changing Minds While Learning to Live With Epilepsy

When Tehya Mrotek had a seizure for the first time in class six years ago, she wasn’t the only one caught off guard by it. It wasn’t until Tehya’s seizure that her high school realized they weren’t familiar with epilepsy, nor were they equipped to administer seizure first-aid. With the help of Mayo Clinic, Tehya’s care team was able to provide treatment to diminish the frequency of her seizures. As a result of her condition, not only had all of Tehya’s teachers and administrators become proficient in epilepsy education, but the town of Stewartville had received certification as a Seizure Smart Community from the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota within three years.
