Oct 22, 2017 · Treating Osteoporosis in Bones, Joints & Muscles

I had my last of 3 Reclast infusions in 2015.The infusions themselves are not a problem—just 15 minutes each. I had no obvious side effects. However, I had a dental implant placed in 2012, and waited 6 months before starting Reclast in early 2013. This past July the implant failed and eventually just fell out. My dentist is sure the Reclast was the cause. I am hesitant to start Prolia now, even though it is not a bisphosphonate.

Jawbone necrosis is listed as an adverse effect of taking Prolia. All my upper front teeth are crowns to cosmetically correct gaps in my smile. My teeth were triangular shaped, leaving gaps at the gumline. The remaining molars are caps due to large fillings being non-replaceable. I also wore braces for 4 years prior to the crown work. In light of all the dental work I have had, taking Prolia doesn’t seem like a wise decision. In hindsight, I probably should have insisted on veneers for my front teeth. Although, that is what I thought I was getting at the time. My dentist still refers to these crowns as my “veneers”. A serious misunderstanding on my part. By the time I realized what all the grinding was about, I had nubs for teeth.

Continuing the previous discussion: my third & last dose of IV Reclast was in March, 2015. My first IV Reclast dose was in late 2012.
In early 2012, I had a dental implant placed in my last upper right molar space. I waited 6 months to make sure it was well-seated before starting Reclast. July 24, 2017, during a routine dental cleaning, I mentioned that the implant was loose feeling. An x-ray was taken and an appointment made for tightening the abutment on July 26, 2017. The crown was removed and attempts to tighten the abutment failed. It would have to be removed on August 10th. On August 8th, the screw fell out on its own. The implant failure was blamed on the Reclast.
I was scheduled to start Prolia injections just prior to the dental issue, so I canceled the appointment until after it was resolved. Although Prolia is not a bisphosphonate, I am having reservations about taking the injections. All this to ask, what would you recommend?

Before Fosamax hit the market my rheumatologist had me on Didronel, a bisphosphonate for Paget’s disease, for my osteoporosis. Then, I took Fosamax for years followed by Actonel to minimize the esophageal irritation. I soon had the feeling that something was in the back of my throat all the time, but had no pain. Following an upper GI endoscopy, I was diagnosed with chronic esophagitis. I had no other choice besides Miacalcin injectable or nasal spray. I chose the nasal spray. After years of using the nasal spray, I was not gaining/maintaining bone mass as desired, so I started Reclast IV infusion

I used Miacalcin Nasal Spray for a few years after being diagnosed with chronic esophagitis. I didn’t gain any bone mass during that time, but I didn’t lose any eithet. I have not been able to blow my nose since thrn due to dry nasal membranes. I just finished 3 yearly infusions of Reclast with no ill effects & some modest gain in my spine. I will start Prolia injections at the end of the year.

I just pulled out the few records I have, & in 2009-2010 my T-score was
-2.6 for my left hip. At that time I was using Miacalcin Nasal Spray as an
alternative to Fosamax, etc. I continued using it until 2013 when I
started the Reclast infusions. My 2015 bone density was -2.5 in the left
hip. My spine bone density was up to -1.4. So, the increase in my left
hip was moderate, but headed in the right direction. The increase in my
spine BMD was more dramatic. I don’t have my previous spinal readings, but
my internist was quite pleased with the increase. I will start Prolia in
December or January. I hope you & your friend have positive results with
your treatments. I have recently increased my vitamin D dose to 4000 I.U.
a day. (1000 I.U. in my Calcium Citrate + D tablets plus 3x1000I.U.
capsules). If I exercised regularly, I would probably see better results.

Apr 18, 2016 · Questions about Reclast for osteoporosis. in Bones, Joints & Muscles

I have taken Reclast infusions for the last 3 years, which is the maximum
no. of doses until more studies are done. I experienced no side effects,
but I don’t have cardiac or diabetic issues. I have osteoarthritis &
osteoporosis, as far as bone/joint diagnoses go and am a 66 year old Asian
female, 5’2.5″, & 125 lbs. I have had slight increases in bone density in
my left hip & spine.
My MD plans to start me on Prolia injections this year.

Apr 18, 2016 · How to manage joint pain in Bones, Joints & Muscles

I have osteoarthritis mainly in my hands, but I have minor pain in my lower
back, neck, knees, & hips. I have been taking Celebrex (celecoxib) at least
15 years. I have tried to stop taking it, but I have found that without it
I cannot function. Prior to Celebrex, I tried naproxen, Daypro, diclofenac,
Relafen, & other NSAIDs. After years of these meds & osteoporosis meds, I
developed chronic esophagitis, with the only symptom being a feeling of
something in the back of my throat all the time. So, the Cox2-inhibitors
were the only logical meds for me. All but Celebrex have been taken off the
market. Still, the quality of life I get from Celebrex is worth the
supposed risk. I have not experienced any side effects that have caused
further care or meds. Hope this helps.
