Aug 15, 2017 · First day on Metformin in Diabetes/Endocrine System

I’ve been on Metformin for 2 years. 500 mg in the AM and PM. A1C is 6.2 to 6.5. I had no side effects from the start and am hoping to be able to get off Metaformin at some point by following The Mount Athos Diet, which is 3 days fasting, 3 days moderation and 1 day feasting. Sugar, processed food and red meat are allowed once a week on Sundays. Fasting days are vegetarian (fruit, vegetables, nuts, beans and seeds – basically reverse diabetes) – and the “Moderate” days include fish and chicken. This is how the monks on Mt Athos eat and it is a modified Mediterranean diet. These monks live 10 years longer than the average Greek male and have no cancer, heart disease or diabetes. Seems worth a shot!

Mar 13, 2017 · ~ Do I stay here and make my kids happy, or do I move back? ~ in Mental Health

Your spiritual family is your “real” family – blood relatives, less so – particularly in the bigger picture. I was married to a narcissist for two years and never married again, it was so traumatic. Sadly I had to co-parent with him (more than 33 years now) our only child, so watching her jumping through hoops trying to get him to love her has been torture. Very very hard to parent emotionally healthy children with a narcissist and your daughters are doubtless going to have been impacted. Anyway after forty years, you’ve gone above and beyond for your adult children – they have their own lives now – and you need to focus on your spiritual family and recognize at 72, it is now or never. I think we have a responsibility to recognize our “higher” purpose in life – remember the first commandment – and if you have a meaningful spiritual life back in your condo, go for it. Teaching your children that you also have an important life (above and beyond them and their desire to be with their dad) and just return to the place you are happy and most God centered. Life is short. If you make God #1 in your life, you’ll never be sorry. Focus on your spiritual family, not blood relatives and you’ll find your way into a better life. If you don’t, you are going to lose your health from the stress. Not advisable! What makes other people “happy” isn’t remotely relative to your situation. If your spiritual community is close to your condo, I’d go back there asap. And when you do visit, your two girls and your grandkids will appreciate you more than they do now. It will be more “special” to see you. The Orthodox monks on Mt Athos actually place the gift of discernment above love, because you can love the wrong people – and ultimately end up mired in idolatry. Put your deep religious faith in God in first place and you’ll be fine. Best wishes, Carol

Feb 20, 2017 · Chronic Hives and any Cure?? in Skin Health

I had chronic hives for 18 months and thought I was going to die. It was awful. They appeared within thirty day after I finished an intensive course of antibiotics called a Prev Pac that is standard remedy for H Pylori. Doctors were baffled, prescribed Prednisone and Benadryl and finally the Mayo Clinic did an overnight patch test on my back. I reacted to 8 things, including Balsam of Peru. When I went on a Balsam of Peru diet, the hives immediately vanished. They were being triggered by the addition of lemon or lime in my drinking water! Mind you, I’ve never had any allergy to food in my entire life and had been eating citrus without any problems until this intensive round of antibiotics. I understand that Balsam of Peru is one of the top five allergies – and since virtually everyone is taking antibiotics and they apparently can kill off “good” gut bacteria – this is the downside. “Skin rash” is listed as a common side effect of antibiotics – but not severe food allergies or chronic hives! I thought I was going to die from the chronic itching and am so relieved to know that I can avoid the entire problem simply by changing my diet. Thank you Mayo Clinic for doing the test strips on my back and pinpointing this reaction.

Feb 20, 2017 · Horrible Hives in Skin Health

I suffered from hives for 18 months after an intensive round of antibiotics for H Pylori called a Prev Pac. I was desperate and beyond miserable. The Mayo Clinic did some overnight skin allergy testing and discovered I was allergic a couple things, including Balsam of Peru. I had never heard of such a thing and was squeezing lemon and lime into my drinking water several times a day. Once I stopped doing that (which I had done for many years – no prior allergy to citrus) the hives vanished. When I have vanilla, or citrus (mostly lemon or lime) the hives immediately return. But reportedly Balsam of Peru is one of the top five allergies today and if you have taken antibiotics (who hasn’t?!!!) it could kill off some gut bacteria and trigger a food allergy. I tested negative to any food allergies, so this really came out of left field. Good luck with your hives. I suspect hives might be related to missing gut bacteria and there is more research being done in that area. How our gut bacteria impacts our immune system is the new frontier in medicine.

I am using Allegra with 5mg prednisone whenever I get absolutely desperate. The hives are still spreading however. Putting an AC in my bedroom as I noted that having AC seems to handle them pretty effectively.
