Aug 26, 2011 · Social Media Summit Scholarship Essay – Martha Garrett in Brain & Nervous System

Thank you to Mayo Clinic for giving so many of us the opportunity to win scholarships to the Social Media Summit. Although I wasn’t awarded one of them, I have gained this unique network to continue reaching out to those who deal with chronic illness and their caregivers. It’s just wonderful that Mayo Clinic “Gets it” regarding the importance of social media. My plan is to stay involved on your discussion boards and even attend the summit if I’m blessed with another avenue to make this happen.

Thanks also to all of you who viewed and “liked” and commented on my essay.

And lastly thanks to all of you who submitted your essay’s. Each story has touched my life and the lives of many others.

Hoping all of you will share your twitter handles # http://www.Twitter.com/SwitchingGranny so that we can stay closely in touch.

How kind your comments. Yet how true.. I know that it is by reaching out through the medium of social media that we are able to connect and move past our own difficulties and begin helping others who need guided through their own health issues. I want to be able to help them to navigate this virtual space of Social Media which is the new way people are getting information and reaching one another.. both for their sake and for my own… because I find purpose in helping others.

Tracy that means so much. I’m excited about reaching out online and finding about all the latest clinical trials out there for him. Latest research etc. Good informative discussion boards.

Aug 20, 2011 · Tonight my son posted on his facebook that he's been diagnosed with in Just Want to Talk

Tonight my son posted on his facebook that he’s been diagnosed with parkinson’s. What are your thoughts on sharing such news publicly? He’s only 33- it’s so freshly painful. However his symptoms have been for a couple years at least.

no doubt I do… and yet Parkinson’s is a completely different thing than MS and early onset even different from other Parkinsons. I’m so concerned for him. I feel that again it will be social Media that will help us through the ropes of knowing where the best places for support are and the most current research and potential clinical trials.

But this social media summit is indeed where my passion is online. Hopefully if I’m awarded a scholarship I’ll be able to share with others how I connect and learn from them how I can make more of an impact especially when dealing with those with chronic illness. Thank you

Today I had several people contacting me about why I had deactivated fb. I actually felt bad and have reactivated it. Guess it is good that they make it nearly impossible to delete one’s profile. But I’m loving this new site. It’s just about perfect

Aug 18, 2011 · What do you think of this Mayo Clinic community site? in Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT)

So far (two days in) I am finding it entirely well done. I wish facebook was as nice as this. I love how you can edit a comment like you can on G+ after you’ve posted it. I like how the treads of replies are laid out. Very user friendly.. Impressed. I can see myself making connections here that will last a life time. Imagine I’ll be here daily! Thank you for providing this unique space in the midst of so many.
