It was not originally prescribed to take the place of ,but to assist the prednisone to taper off. My local rheumy says I can use at lower dose if needed and I do.I started on prednisone almost 4 years ago when my GCA and PMR was positively diagnosed.I have had many ups and downs but feel pretty good now. Thank the Lord. Long road. I have eliminated sugar, soy, dairy, and wheat which has helped immensely. I eat those things VERY sparingly. I wish you the best. This is just what ,by many trials ,has helped me.

Hi Linda,
I never had the burst of pain you are describing. I will tell you, however, that my rheumy at Johns Hopkins put me on 200 mg. celebrex to help with the pain in tapering off pred. I have now been off prednisone since April and I'm about 90% pain free most days.I now take 100 mg every other day to keep the PMR under control. I wish you the best and prayers your way to find comfort.

Tue, Jul 23 11:16pm · Giant Cell Arteritis Concerns after One-sided Jaw Pain in Autoimmune Diseases

After headaches, prominent vein shows at my temples ,and left side jaw pain, I was diagnosed and confirmed to have GCA by biopsy. Also, had horrific stiffness and pain in hips and shoulders and was diagnosed with PMR at the same time. That was in 2015 at the age of 58 and I'm female. i was under extreme stress caring for my elderly Dad and traveling for my job. I had experienced the jaw pain to the point that I hated opening my mouth to eat. Went to the dentist first and he said he was not TMJ. Went back to my general Dr. and after 3 times complaining that rx anti inflammatory weren't working, I saw a new Dr. and he became alarmed and put me on 60 mg prednisone ,so I would not suffer sight loss.I had a biopsy done by a neuro opthalmologist the following day before the prednisone could produce a false negative. I am very grateful that the new Dr. took it seriously. The outcome could have been much worse. The GCA symptoms went away within days and have not returned. The PMR is a constant battle. I am now after 3 years off prednisone ,but have flares occasionally that I take celebrex for. Sorry to be so lengthy, but many times important details make a difference for others. Prayers be with you.

I had the same dilemma . I very slow tapered ,as you.
Had a little pain and stiffness that would crop up from time to time, but continued to taper. I am finally now off pred and if I'm a bit stiff, I'll take a celebrex or advil on occasion. Everyone seems to respond different.Best of luck to you.

There's hope! I was diagnosed at 57 ,great health and then PMR/GCA came into my life. Johns Hopkins suggested I take 200 mg celebrex to help me taper. (other two other attempts at tapering did not work under 5mg). It worked. I also went to an extreme diet, no dairy, wheat, sugar, soy. Anti inflammatory diet didn't help me. I finally have lost 19 pounds of the 30 I gained on pred over 3 years. I didn't think I could do it ,but whatever ,it's working. I still have a martini a few times a week and some dark chocolate.. Don't give up or you will feel more stiff and pained. Prayers for you, if you don't mind.
