Tue, Apr 2 8:37pm · Walking without a hip joint in Bones, Joints & Muscles

Hi, cheryl99. I am very fortunate. After emergency debridement surgery, followed by a dozen blood draws spanning 6 weeks of daily antibiotic infusions and 3 months of close observation, I have been cleared by my infectious disease doctor. The MRSA infection in my hip replacement surgical site was eradicated before it could attach and harbor on the prosthesis. I have much to be thankful for. You are very kind to ask. I hope it is well with you. Although I don’t visit this forum as much as I used to, I still pray for everyone who has posted, including you. Blessings, jbro

Isabel,
My infection did not involve E-Coli, so I do not know which antibiotic(s) are best for that. You can be confident your doctor started with the best treatment. In conversations I had with my infectious disease doctor, she said there are certain instances when she will change the antibiotic, or the method of delivery. Your case probably doesn’t require that, but it is OK to ask. I bombarded my surgeon and infectious disease doctors with questions because I thought the stakes were too high (with a MRSA infection) not to be fully informed. To fight MRSA, I was given the option of either Vancomycin or Daptomycin, both via daily infusions for 6 weeks. I chose Daptomycin because it only requires one infusion each day, rather than two. Also, they thought it would be kinder to my kidneys. Since making that choice, I have read that a Vancomycin-resistant MRSA now exists (referred to as VRSA), although not widespread yet. Scary stuff. I am praying for the eradication of harmful microorganisms in all of us. Blessings, and Happy New Year, jbro

Izabel,
If they haven't already, I would make sure your doctors explain why they selected the antibiotic being used, and the method of delivery. As others have shared in this discussion, doctors will change antibiotic treatment in some cases if circumstances warrant a change.
I will be praying that your CRP and SED rates are within normal range the next time you have a blood draw. Blessings, jbro

Thank you for helping me understand how your circumstances are much different than those of us who never had an infection from radiation damage, but became infected after hip replacements. Your case was certainly more urgent and complicated. I am praying for your infection to disappear so that the day comes when antibiotics are no longer needed. I am also praying for your hip joint to become more stable so that your pain goes away and you can become more active. Thank you for helping and encouraging others like me in this forum, jbro

cheryl99,
Again, I really appreciate your time in sharing your knowledge. I am still being evaluated (for another 2-1/2 months) to determine whether my prosthetic hip joint needs to be removed. It all depends on whether they caught the infection in time with debridement surgery and subsequent 6-weeks of daily antibiotic infusions.
Your testimony about living without one hip has been very comforting to me as someone who dreads the thought of possible infections in the future. I wish you the very best, jbro
