Aug 16, 2017 · Cardiac Rehab in Heart & Blood Health

I had a great first day! I met with the intake nurse for two hours. She was warm, sharp as a tack, and funny. I meet with an exercise physiologist tomorrow.

Thank you, Kanaaz! I am so grateful to the Mayo Clinic for the wonderful care I received there when I visited the Rochester campus for my SCAD work-up.

I am starting cardiac rehab tomorrow following two minor heart attacks last spring due to Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD). I am wondering what kind of experience others had from rehab. What did you find helpful?

Oh dear, that is such a hard introduction to motherhood. My friend, Nancy was exactly your age, with a new baby, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She is now at 14 years of no evidence of disease!

I am 51 with no cardiac risk factors. I had two heart attacks last spring caused by SCAD. I had the same medication reaction to Coreg and made the same medication change. I am tolerating that med fine. I am also glad after having my SCAD diagnosis confirmed last week at Mayo, that I am able to take fewer meds. I also learned that I don’t have FMD.

The good and bad news about SCAD is that very few lifestyle changes were recommended for me. I suspect that stress was a precipitating factor for my SCAD and now two cardiologists have posited the same. So I have upped my practice of mindfulness meditation, which is an evidence-based practice for stress management. (I am a clinical psychologist in private practice.) Mindfulness helped me get through the stress of my breast cancer treatment five years ago. It is helping now, too.

I wish you the very best of health.
